cjam93 Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Hey guys so like the topic says I would like to pick up a rod made for jerkbaits and topwater. I was looking at the Skeet Reese jerkbait/topwater rod the other day and I really like the feel of it a lot. I am just wondering if there is anything else in that price range you would recommend I look at also. Thanks! Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 1, 2014 Super User Posted May 1, 2014 What price range are you looking at? Cabelas has a new line of rods with a jerkbait/topwater rod, 6'9" M-F, but the thing with this is you will get a ton of different answers on this. Jerkbaits and topwaters are tough because there are a couple different thoughts on what is best, some anglers, like myself, like to use a shorter fast action rod, to control the action of the bait better, in a medium power, for the forgiveness needed to keep from pulling small treble hooks out of the fish's mouth. Then there is another type of angler that treats these baits like a crankbait, and those anglers normally like a rod of 7' or slightly longer to make long cast, and a moderate action to fight the fish while not pulling the treble hooks free. There isn't a right or wrong way, but both sides have to make compromises, for example, anglers liking the shorter, faster rods will sacrifice a few lost fish which will happen because the rods don't have the parabolic action to keep them pinned on small treble hooks. Anglers liking the long, parabolic action rods will sacrifice strikes because of a little less control, it all depends on which way you lean. Quote
NathanW Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 The 6'10" jerkbait topwater rod is the only Skeet Reese rod that I actually like. The 7' S-Glass rod is not bad either but its on the heavy side. Honestly, its a no brainer buy that rod and you will love it. I own two and use them all the time. They are the also the least expensive rod I carry and get used almost every trip out. Something I cannot say about the most expensive rods I carry. Just dont expect to fish anything t-rigged with it like flukes, toads or frogs. Its not that kind of jerkbait/topwater rod. You wont get those fish in the boat. It will work for treble hook baits I also use it for swimming a grub on an exposed hook jighead. Quote

RandySpear Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I use a 6'8" m-f Shimano Crucial. Love it for jerkbaits. As smalljaw pointed out, great for control. One downside it casting distance. You can certainly use it for topwater as well; however, I have the same rod except m-xf for my topwater. I just prefer the extra backbone for topwater. Quote
Grantman83 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Bashed through it may get, the skeet rod is perfectly fine for topwaters. I have owned this rod and for it's intended applications it wasn't bad at all and it can be had for a great price. For jerkbaits, use fluro and You will be fine Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 Sorry. I can't get past that ugly yellow. Might be the greatest rod for your use in the world, but I'd never know. A rod I used last year was the Fenwick 6'9" MXF Smallmouth. I liked how it worked the bait for me. Didn't catch a fish on it tho.................surprise, surprise..............not. Sucks to be me.
