bassdisaster Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I found a shimano calais on Craigslist for 200 bucks is that a good deal? It's high end so I'm guessing its a good reel can anybody tell me about it? He also has a lews tournament pro.for 100 I know that's a good deal so I'm gonna buy the lews at least. Thanks Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 It retailed for 349 I believe.. I would talk him down to 170 - 180 if it is used. If you are going to buy the Lew's as well, see if he will take 260-270 for both. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 The Calais is a smooth, nice casting reel. They are on the heavy side by todays standards and if you're one who likes to tinker or DIY service avoid this model. They are unnecessarily difficult to work on. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 The two piece shaft that holds the side plate & the two small screws in the top of the nose piece that have to come out to get the crank side plate and the Calcutta style thumb bar attachment just make these not as simple as the Curados etc. I didn't mean to overstate the issue I just never saw the logic in why they are the way they are compared to the other Shimanos. Super User Tywithay Posted May 1, 2014 Super User Posted May 1, 2014 That's a good deal for a really nice reel. I see them selling for $250-$300 on ebay quite a bit. Quote

buzzfrog Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I fished one before, very nice but yea a tad heavy. I want all of shimanos high end toys Quote
21farms Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 which model calais is it? IMHO, the most desirable calais is the 100A...more compact than the 200 size and harder to find and command the highest prices of the non-DC models. all calais are smooth as butter...probably the smoothest reels available. bassdisaster Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 Okay guys so I went and looked at everything last night and ended up buying a nice lews tourney pro and a st. Croix legend tournament 7'1 for 200 bucks! I'm pretty sure I scored lol but the calais is a 200a and it was almost new the guy never even uses it I held off on buying it last night because I hate spending that much at one time. But do yall think I should buy it? I can probably get it for 175 Quote
bassdisaster Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 Oh yeah and the tourney pro is amazing! It's so buttery smooth its almost unbelievable! I see why everybody talks so good about it now. I've had a regular speed spool for a while and I love it but the.tourney pro is just in a different league. Awesome! Quote
stkbassn Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I'm building my collection of Chronarch 100B's now and I can tell you though slightly heavier and a tad larger than some of my reels, I wouldn't have a new one over them.....personal preference of course but if you get that Calais you will understand just how good these higher end Shimano reels are! And this weight people speak of won't be an issue once you put it on a rod and take that first cast...you'll forget all about it! I say get the Calais and the Lew's if you can but talk the man down some...I'm sure he'll negotiate. Good luck! Quote
primetime Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I like to try new models and brands every time I purchase a new set up and working around rods and reels all day they some how end up in my Rod Rack and I can honestly say that I am no longer judging reels by how much they cost when comparing to another reel. I find the Lews Baitcasting reels (Just grabbed BB1 and Tourny Pro and I can't get over how well they fit into my palm, and also how smooth they cast. I have always felt you get what you pay for and that is true, especially with reels, as you can buy a Silver Max or Black Max and they will most likely work well for a year or two, get the job done, but when I see sales and the Exceler for $45, Citrix $59, Orra SX 99, Pro Qualifier etc...I honestly do not reach for my 2 most expensive Reels, since I purchased them based on what everyone else said about the reel, and they are in great shape, I just traded the Daiwa and also the Okuma Serrano to a friend since the Exceler is a steal for cranking, the Aird at &69 for combo is just a cool looking reel, I could care less about the T-Wing, it maybe gave me an extra few yards once in a while, but just one more gadget that can break. I purchase Silver Maxes and Black Maxes for Kayak Fishing and buy them Refurbished for a good deal, and they seem to be nice for a few months and then they start to go downhill, but I fish reels hard, and for the Money, they are good all purpose reels.....I think the Citrix at $49 with rebate is the deal right now for anyone on a budget. I like that reel better than the Serrano, and Komodo,Krios...I find quantum to be nice but it has to be PT or they seem to not look so shiny after a few trips. I am looking to get a deal on a Pinnacle Optimus or Producer as I want to try them out, I hear good things. Hard to argue with a Pro Max, Orra or Curado, Accurrist, Kinetic, BPS, even Gander Mountain has a nice reel for $49 which seems to be a Kinetic. Quote
bassdisaster Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 Primetime that had absolutely nothing to do with this thread? 1 Quote
scbassin Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I own a bunch of the Shimano Calais line which includes the antaras. If you can buy that reel for $200 or less buy it. It is well worth that money. They are very smooth reels. 1 Quote

frogflogger Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 The calais will be a great reel to pass down through generations - it will be butter smooth for years - a great reel. Quote
OK Bass Hunter Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Buy the reel, you won't regret it. Or buy it and send it to me and I'll pay you for it and the shipping and I'll throw in a lil extra for your trouble. 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 3, 2014 Super User Posted May 3, 2014 If you have the opportunity of getting a Calais, any Calais for that matter, for $200 get it as fast as you can. It´s a wonderful reel, I used to own a Calais 100A. 1 Quote
