Who builds their own rods at home?  Is it difficult?  Can you get more rod for your money doing this?

Every rod in my boat I have made myself. A majority of them are Mudhole MHX blanks. You won't be able to build a rod for cheaper than you can buy one. But once you get the hang of it, if using the right blank & components you will be able to build a high end rod the way you want it set up.

Yep, I build my own rods too.  I prefer that my rods are set up a certain way and building them myself is the only way to achieve this.  You definitely don't save any money but if you aren't satisfied with off the shelf rods, it's the only way to go.  I buy some stuff from Mudhole, they have a great selection but make sure you get everything you need in one order as shipping is ridiculous.

Th degree of difficulty in rod building depends somewhat on your aptitude for working with your hands. There is a definite learning curve. You can build  a better rod than you can buy off the shelf but don't get into it just to save money. Mudhole has a good selection and service, as good a place to start as any.

You won't save any money by building yourself, but I think you'll get a better rod for the money you spend. as for suppliers, Karen at Bingham gets (almost) all of my business. I have to admit to using MudHole on the rare occasion when customers want certain winding checks that are exclusive to them.

I bought my drying motor from mudhole, because they  have some nice inexpensive ones. I buy most of my other supplies from anglersworkshop. They have 15% off right now, and seem to have sales often; so you can save some cash. Shipping is $15.95, but it kind of washes out with the 15% off they're currently offering.

Anglersworkshop has decent shipping. So does swamplandtackle. Look through the sponser bar on rodbuilding.org. Lots of good stuff there and they post sales on the boards too.
