Fishing Line Thick Braid With Light Mono?

Hello everyone, I know this is a bass forums but it's still fishing right?? I've only been lightly fishing for over a year and already, my tackle box has gained a lot of assessories including a new fishing rod, it's highly addicitive and relaxing.-- I was previously using a cheap diawa rod combo (25$ maybe) that was stolen so I decided to buy a new one. I grabbed a BPS pro qualifer(bait caster) with the carbon light rod.

 

At the moment I have braided 20LB(8lb test dia) Fireline spooled up but here's the dilemma. While I can fish for any fresh water fish in my area with my current setup, the braided is a poor choice for catching trout. With my braided line attached as my main line, would throwing 2-4lb mono/fluro leader line be any hindrance to my trout game as long as I can get my fishing rig up to weight for casting (using bait caster)???

 

And... what are some of your favorite fishing rigs for trout fishing? I would love to hear what more experienced fishermans found useful.

Your best bet with what you have would be to attach a mono or floro leader to the braid with an Alberto knot. Trout have softer mouths and ideally a medium rod with good parabolic action coupled with mono or floro would be best.

Second that. Try the flea market or walmart should be able to find a decent combo for under 40 at one if these places.

If you carolina rig a trout lure to something you can throw, it will work fine (cast and retrieve, don't drag). I'd use a swivel to tie a light leader not too long to make casting awkward (you can use a sinker or lure). I found quite by accident that trout will follow many smallish bass lures but seldom strike them. A small crankbait (KVD 1.0, LC 0.5, Combat Crank Mini to name a few ) will catch them some days better than any "trout" lure, and can be thrown with a Med BC outfit. Of course a light spinning outfit would be my 1st choice.

I agree. Half of fishing is using equipment which is more specific to the species you seek. Yes, you can shoot a rabbit with .475 Nitro Express Rifle, but that's hardly enjoyable. Walmarts always has in-expensive combinations you can choose from. For less than $25.00, you can pick up a light action spinning rod and matching reel; with 6# test mono and you are good to go.

The problem you have is the rod and baitcasting reel isn't made to cast light weight lures. You can use a sliding sinker rig OK, but the leader strength at 1or 2 lbs is too weak for the reels drag and the rods power.

Try using 3 or 4 lb leader material, should work for a sliding sinker rig or a slip bobber rig.

Looks like a spinning outfit is in your future.
