Hello and Welcome to BR ~

Generally speaking, a good frog rod is a little heavy for an all purpose top water stick.

Most top water baits are treble hook lures and that frog rod being quite stout could contribute to more than a few pulled hooks.

So should i use my 7' MH cranking rod for topwater? or entirely get a new setup

I would say that that would be a better bet for the moment.  What topwaters are you looking to throw.  I use a mod fast action 7'MH for walking baits, larger wakebaits(although really not a true topwater) and on heavier buzzbaits.  Poppers, props, and smaller walking baits I use a M moderate action since the hooks tend to be smaller and the softer rod absorbs a bit more of the shock to help keep the hooks from pulling.  Those are my preferences, Hope this helps a little.

There are as many personal preferences in rod actions as there are different rods to chose from.

I'd say try to match your rod choice with the type & size lures you'll be throwing along with the size & type of line that will suit the baits.

I do not use any of my cranking rods (which are glass) for top water; they are too "slow" to work the baits properly.  I prefer a 6'6" - 7' medium action graphite stick with mono line for treble hook top water baits.

You may prefer something else.  The right answer is what works for you.

A lot of people prefer a shorter rear handle for top water. I know that I do. I also find a long rod to be awkward unless I am using it tip up.

A mod. action cranking rod is fine for small topwater like 1/4oz. pups.  For typical sized topwaters I prefer a med. action graphite in the older 'blends' like IM-6 or IM-7 and avoid IM-10 or "50 Ton".

Depends the weight of the topwater baits your throwing, for my regular topwater baits i rotate a 6'10 mh fast cumulus, and 6'5 m fast cumulus. Im typically throwing 1/4oz poppers, 3/8-1/2oz buzzbaits, and 1/2oz sammy's. If im stepping up to the 3/4-1oz range ill use my 7 ft mh crucial crankbait rod.
