MainelyBASS Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Took it out of the package and caught 5 fish in 9 casts this weekend. Ive always wanted to throw a big swimbait like the Rago but could never afford them. The 999 series is $9.99 and catches fish. Considering im throwing it in Maine and the water wasn't nearly as clear as it is supposed to be, I bet this bait will do serious work in the lakes that are super clear. Quote
Primus Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I've bought a couple but haven't thrown it yet, I appreciate your report. The 7" Rago BVD line through has been my most consistent producer for the larger soft swimbaits . Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 30, 2014 Global Moderator Posted April 30, 2014 I bought one as soon as they came out but haven't had a chance to fish it seriously yet. I've made a few cast and the action was great and I have no doubts it will put fish in the boat for me. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted April 30, 2014 Super User Posted April 30, 2014 ive been looking at them, but havent pulled the trigger to get them yet Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted April 30, 2014 Super User Posted April 30, 2014 How fast does it sink? I haven't fished one. For a couple bucks more, I like the 316 Rising Son or one of the Osprey line thru's. Just a couple other options to think about. Quote

Just a couple other options to think about. I have been a religious Top Shelf swimbait user since KVD won with it on Smith Mountain Lake. I also have the winged talon from osprey. For $9.99 its the most realistic bait ive ever thrown. Sinks fairly quick but has an unreal tail action. I wish there were more lakes in my area that would let me throw more swimbaits. I just don't have the water quality around me to do it. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 19, 2014 Global Moderator Posted May 19, 2014 Well I got a chance to test mine. Action is great, durability is terrible. First fish ripped the entire insert out of the middle of the bait. A bunch of mend it later, next fish peeled the bait almost in half and basically turned the bait inside out. A bunch more mend it and now I doubt it will swim right anymore it's so jacked up. Quote
Mattlures Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 MainelyBASS why would you think there has to be a certain water quality for that swimbait to work? Thinking that the water needs to be clear is the 3rd biggest misconception about swimbaits. It doesn't even make sense. The 1st is that people think they don't have big enough fish to eat a big bait and the 2nd is that your only fishing for 1 bite or 1 or 2 fish a day. at least those I can understand why somebody might think that way but the clear water thing never made sense to me. Don't believe that for a minute. Go throw that bait in dirty water. The bass know how to hunt and feed in dirty water and they will have no problem finding your bait especially a big thumping boot tail. 2 Quote
gobig Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Matt is 110% right on. Contrary to popular myth not all lakes in California are gin clear with trout roaming around like feeder fish. The Delta and Clearlake both get pretty dirty and Clearlake especially is an epic swimbait lake. Quote
