I decided to try my luck cleaning and re-lubing my BPS PQ for the first time. 

 

So I got the reel apart, cleaned and re-lubed everything, its all back together but the thumb bar wont press down? Any ideas on what could be causing this? I followed the schematics that came with the reel when I reassembled, and I thought I got it right. Obviously not lol....

 

 

Could someone maybe point me in the right direction?

Nvm. I figured it out. I had the white half circle piece with the springs on it backwards if that makes sense

The yoke I think it's called. I did that too my first time.

That is the Yoke. A common mistake. To remember in the future, the beveled side goes down.

Thanks! I'll definitely remember that. Are all reels setup pretty much the same on the inside?

For the most part, yes.

 

Before you put your reel back together, take the springs off the yoke and put a finger on it so it doesn't go anywhere, and test the clutch by pressing the button down. It should move the yoke out. Then re-engage it by turning the drive shaft to make sure everything is sound.

When opening a new reel I suggest taking pictures as you move along the dissasembly process, so when you reassemble it there won´t be any spare parts left, no wrongly positioned parts and so.

With the PQ, I believe That there is a video on youtube by TackleJunky81 and he does a full disassemble, cleaning, and reassembly of the reel. The video is really helpful and it walks you right through it.

I watched all 3 parts of the video before I took mine apart. I didn't follow along as I was taking mine apart tho, I'm to impatient.

 

I would highly suggest those videos to anyone who wants to learn how to clean their own reels.

Those videos are better than nothing but still only a half-fast (pun intended) cleaning. The clutch mechanism he say's "there's not much too" is one of the problem areas for that reel design. A Pro Cleaning, done right strips every part to the bare frame. The Hot Sauce oil is OK but the grease is horrible. It gums up and makes the next cleaning harder than it need to be. I'm not discouraging DIY altogether, just take the stuff on the internet or other unknown sources with a grain of salt.

I actually took the reel apart to the bare frame. Only thing that gave me issues was getting the clutch mechanism(I think that's what its called) back together right. Took me a few tries but I got it.

The little springs are tricky to maneuver around with tension on them.

What grease would you recommend that could probably be had at a local tackle shop?

Next time take the tension off the springs before taking the screws out and put the tension back on the springs last. For grease I use marine grease, Super Lube synthetic or Cal's Universal Drag Grease. Drag grease can go on gears but don't put regular grease on drag parts. Use oil on sliding parts like the clutch. I use 80w-140 gear oil on frame bearings and the level wind.

Do you have to put grease on your drag? I feel like I heard someone say that somewhere along the line, could be wrong though.

It depends on the system. The PQ is a dry system I believe.
