There's a ton of plastics you can use. They serve a purpose for certain times and places. You just gotta pick a brand you like. Strike King, makes a great soft plastic. Theu have stick baits, worms creature baits and so on. Everyone is different when it comes to plastics. They work great in the summer time. The bass are slow to feed sometimes. Plastics give a great deal of dealing with a slow eatin Bass.

I'll continue with the stick bait theme, any brand in green pumpkin, t-rigged weightless. I can't comment on the wacky rig cus I haven't used it yet, but I hear it's a good one.

I'd say a good starter plastic set would consist of a white zoom super fluke and a black or green stick bait. If you can't get a bite on either of those. fish are probably not around.

Since you are new to soft plastics I would go for those that work and are cheap.  One bag of Yum Yum-Dingers in five inch, one bag of Berkley Powerbait ribbontail worm around seven inches, and a bag of five or six inch plastic worms.  Texas Rig them or Split-shot rig them and away you go to catching bass!  I love love love soft plastics!

Preston. I'll expand on my post since I missed the second part of yours. The how to. There are many ways to fish soft plastics. The simplest for a beginner with flukes and senkos is weightless Texas rigged. I prefer a 3/0 ewg hook for both with is nice for me since I don't have to retie to change baits . I generally fish a fluke as a topwater or sub surface bait. Twitching the rod top then kilimg the action. Described as a twitch twitch pause. A senko I will cast out and count 15-20 then raise the rod tip and repeat. These are probably the two simplest methods to fish each bait. The nice thing about them is again you can fish a fluke like a senko and a senko like a fluke and still be successful. Good luck with your endeavors and don't be afraid to ask questions.

A 6" black worm split shot rigged. Cast it out and watch the line for movement. Wait a few minutes, move it a foot let it sit and repeat etc. It can be productive on the cast as it falls.

The plastic worm is the number bass bait.
