paulkuan Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Hello everyone, I am looking for a rather versatile rod that can allow me to fish the topwater and spinnerbait. I mainly fishing jig and Texas and I would like to point me to a fishing with lures that vibrate more. I use a float tube, so I want a rod with a short heel not exceeding 7 feet. My gaze fell on a shimano crucial cumara, mojobass topwater jerk &. What do you recommend? thks Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 The jig/plastics rod will do a good job on the spinner baits. A top water rod should have a softer tip (not to be confused with slower action) imo. Quote
paulkuan Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 I just looking for a rod to make a compromise, because I do not want to buy a rod specifically for topwater and spinnerbait. Quote
einscodek Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I just looking for a rod to make a compromise, because I do not want to buy a rod specifically for topwater and spinnerbait. If I use topwater frogs, I want a stiffer rod .. yet walk the dogs and other would like a softer tip. I use my MH 7'6" flipping rod IM8 (light) as a general purpose and it get me long casts.. Not saying its for you but heres what I use it for: topwater frogs spinnerbait small swimbaits worms flippin drop shotting lunker punker JR and Rapala XWalk I usually use medium-large size lures from 3/4oz to 2 oz and this one rod could handle it all. I still carry 3 rods but if I could only take one.. this be it. Hope this helps. Quote
einscodek Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Can you action the topwater properly in a float tube? I suggest a kayak you can stand on.. Quote
HokieDJ Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Try the Dobyn 703. I have it and it's MH/Fast action but it's not as stiff as other MH's rods I have used. So because of that, it lets me throw frogs, spooks, jigs, senkos, etc. Very versatile. It's probably not as good as a dedicated rod for cranks/top water, but it's good enough if that's what you want. 1 Quote
paulkuan Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 I have no problem to manage the topwater on my float tube, provided of course that the heel does not exceed my elbow. I said that it will be mainly for fishing pike in open water and Aspius (a fish that you have probably not) by walking the dog with sammy and water monitor even if sometimes some popper should see the water. I want a stick not too long, it is not necessary because the places I go a fishing. It would be to start up lures that do not exceed 3/4 oz Quote
paulkuan Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 Also I have a fenwick aetos 7 "MH could agree what do you think? Otherwise, I thought of a powell 704 CB Quote
paulkuan Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 I agree with the principle that I do not have an ideal rod for the application but I want to find a good compromise that will ensure in both situations. Quote

They have several models and lengths, like hokie said it is a little softer than its rating imo Quote
Super User bigbill Posted April 29, 2014 Super User Posted April 29, 2014 I use five different setups from shore mainly four spinning and one bait caster. My boat rods are mostly bait casters. Quote
Cgrinder Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 The Cumara A rods have a surprisingly long handle. I don't believe the butt cap on the rod is factored into the specified length, as my 6'8" Cumara is more like 6'10" total. The Cumara rods might not be ideal for topwater action if you prefer a short handle section. That said, if 1/4 oz poppers and torpedoes are your aim, the 6'8" M Cumara JWR is dreamy aside from the long handle. Dobyns Champion 683C is worth a look, as is Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth casting 6'9" MXF (it has an especially short handle). I have a 703 Savvy and while it's amazing for 1/4-3/8 oz spinnerbaits, I find it to be quite moderate in action and I don't like walking topwaters with it. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 29, 2014 Super User Posted April 29, 2014 Lews has the answer to your problem, their spinnerbait rod is getting a lot of use as a topwater rod, 6'10" MH-F with a soft tip. Quote
John G Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 If you like a shorter rod, 6', that can do everything that you want to do, a Loomis CR723 GLX or IMX is perfect. It's a MH/F with a 1/4 to 3/4 rating. I throw 3/4oz Spooks, Sammy's spinnerbaits etc on mine. Distance is not a problem with the 6' length either. Quote
paulkuan Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 I look at these Loomis for some time but it's beyond the budget I want to devote. The Cannes Lew's unfortunately are not sold here, already the lew's reel is sold 100 euros more than the U.S. price. Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 If you're in a float tube I would definitely suggest a shorter rod like a dobyns 663c or 664c Quote
0119 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 St. Croix makes a good spinnerbait rod that I use to walk the dog and poppers all the time. It's the Spinnerbait Sniper in the LTB series, but may be out of your budget. Daiwa is making a new inshore series of rods that are slightly more limber in the tip and have nice short grips. They are made for golf coast wade fishing. They are under $100 US. Quote
rangerjockey Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 I really like the Denali kovert spinnerbait rod. Its , 6ft.9in. and has a nice tip for WTD lures , I've thrown spooks, dog x , and the repo man on it . It might be a little stout for the 1/4 oz poppers but it's fine for the yellow magic magnum.
