central.PA.bass Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Just as the title says, When you buy a crankbait, jerkbait, trap, topwater, etc. Which brands of these (ie. strike king, lucky craft, bomber, etc......) do you keep the stock hooks on them? and Which brands come with junk hooks that need upgraded and replaced? I've noticed some of my old Rapalas were notorious for getting rusty hooks and I've been noticing my Bombers seem to not have the greatest hooks either... Quote
central.PA.bass Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 Also, when you guys do switch hooks, which hooks do you use? Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted March 9, 2011 Super User Posted March 9, 2011 I usually switch out any hooks that are bronze. I've had alot of trouble with bronze hooks rusting very easily so I usually put either owner stingers or VMC hooks on them. It's usually Strike King baits and sometimes bombers, although I really like the Tx3 rotating trebles, just wish they were black nickel. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 9, 2011 Super User Posted March 9, 2011 I replace them all eventually. I use the Mustad KVD's for pretty much everything. I'll fish with the stock hooks on most Rapalas, Bandits, Spro, Norman, some SK (RES, and 6xd's that come with black nickle hooks, and KVD sb's) and Excailibers. Those baits will get there hooks changed out after the dull/bend/break etc.... Baits that get there hooks changed right out of the box are, sure set Rapalas, Storm Wiggle Warts, any thing else from SK, any thing by Manns, Heddon, or Bomber. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 9, 2011 Super User Posted March 9, 2011 I replace bronze, chrome plated, and Triple Grip treble hooks in any color with black chrome Owner Stinger or Owner Tournament Trebles. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted March 9, 2011 Super User Posted March 9, 2011 I replace most everything with either Triple Grip or Owner stinger. Quote
Super User Marty Posted March 10, 2011 Super User Posted March 10, 2011 I keep the original hooks as long as they can be sharpened to a good point. Some lures that always get hooks replaced are Jitterbugs and the original Rat-L Traps. I've used various brands of replacement hooks which have been satisfactory. At the present time I'm using Gamakatsu round bends because they're the best of the selection that my local store offers. Quote

I don't know what it is with Arbogast lures, but every one I've ever bought has had crappy hooks. They're the only brand that I routinely replace hooks on. Everything else, I replace 'em when they get rusty or damaged. Tom Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 10, 2011 Super User Posted March 10, 2011 VMC is a great replacement hook. 8-) Quote
central.PA.bass Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 i might look into the mustad ultra points.. they seem to be the best value out of all of these.. Quote
GrizzerGreen Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 The hooks on my Heddon Torpedos are definitaly something to be desired. I have some Eagle Claws I wanna swap them out with but I cant get the hooks off the little screw thing..I hope somebody knows what Im talking about haha. And the hooks on the Red Eye Shads..they are VERY sharp but..they bend SO easy. I swapped out the bent one , but aslong as they arent bent, I dont mind them. And I usually replace the hooks when they lose that "sticky" sharpness. Or if they are starting to rust. Quote
Mason D Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 had to pull mine out to check lol. what about cutting the hook off at the eye, adding a split ring and then the new hook? mine could use replacment too >.> Quote
MMan16 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I always check my hooks on whatever bait I buy. But, I usually get LC, Bomber, Bandit, and Rapala. They seem to have good hooks at least good enough not to change right away but I always keep and eye on the through out the year. I like Owners treble hooks there my replacement when it comes time. FL_Sharpshooter Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I replace the hooks on most to all of the baits I purchase. After using the KVD mustad hooks, there's really no going back. Those things are like the Lamborghini of treble hooks. They cost a little more, but man! they are sweet. Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted March 10, 2011 Super User Posted March 10, 2011 If they're stock needlepoint round bends, I'll keep them on to start regardless of brand. All other regular points along with any EWG/Triple Grip types get removed and replaced, usually with RB Gammi's. -T9 Quote
