hooah212002 Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 So my car took a crap and my buddy had a truck for sale and he only wanted $300, so I picked it up. It's nothing fancy, but it gets the job done (the job being: get me to work when my car is out of commission). I have been wanting a fishing truck because fishing poles in a car don't work so well. Since my fishing gear costs more than the truck, I didn't want my reels getting tossed about in the back. So I did the only rational thing a guy that is not creative OR handy at all would do: used some random pieces of metal that looked L shaped laying in my dads garage, cut up some wood, then screwed it into the bed. The rod rack itself is actually store bought, though I could have maybe made it somehow if I was actually handy. here is the final product because there was no sense in taking progress pictures for this DIY: That foot locker you see in the last picture is my truck box. Thank you, United States Army. 1 Quote
NWBasslover Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Dude, I love it! And I know you guys don't hear it enough, but thank you for serving! Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted April 26, 2014 Super User Posted April 26, 2014 Awesome. That is a gnarly rack homie. Like NWBasslover said. Thanks for your service. Quote
hooah212002 Posted April 26, 2014 Author Posted April 26, 2014 Appreciate the token of gratitude, fellas. I am already having trouble with the POS Berkely rod holders, though. The styrofoam is really tight and when I put the reel end of the rod in, it pulls apart like it wants to come out. It figures that my ghetto a** craftmanship with free junk is better that store bough junk. Any ideas for something different? I have no intention of spending that much money, so if I can find crap around the house, that is great. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 Run two small eyebolts into the plastic one at top and bottom. Get a metal rod and slide it through the eyebolts. That will lock the fishing rods in place. To remove them. Simply remove the metal rod. That's my first idea. I'm sure I can come up with some better ones. Or wait on my metal working homie Tipptruck to respond. He probably has some good ideas too. Quote

I want to make it so it is secure, yet easy enough to get out that I don't have to fight with it. Sometimes I find a spot on ,my way to work and I want to toss a few casts real fast just to see what it's like and I'd rather not spend 10 valuable minutes just getting my rods in and out. Quick release bungie/rubber band looks good. 1 Quote

You art work will be in the mail 4/28 by 10 am. I wanted to get them out by Thursday. But work and school. Both decided to go on the rag at the same time. So I was dealing with that. So sorry. Quote

hooah212002 Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Where've you been? Haven't seen you post in awhile. When I put the rods away for the winter, I don't like to torture myself with talking about fishing lol. I come back around this time in preparation for the season. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Now that I have some bbq in me. I have a idea. I got the idea from seeing the plastic ones with the bungee. I would take some metal. More then likely some mild steel. Machine it so it looks like the white plastic part. It would also be about 3/4 of a inch thick. Before any one ask why so thick. I will get to that. Were the bungee gos through the part. I would drill a hole for 1/4 rod. After then cut to rod to the length I need. Then one about a inch long. To act as a hinge. Stick the smaller piece though the hole in the body. Then weld the longer parts to the end of it. This will act like the bungee cord. Were the normal bungee cord just hooks on. I would also weld a u in the front. Also made of 1/4 rod. There is to reasons for that. You could put a paddle lock on it, or if you want to access it quick. Just a simple bolt will work. My idea by no means would be cheaper. I more or less thought about security. The 1/4 rods would be hardened. They would be so hard. No bolt cutters could cut them. They would need a angle grinder. Also depending one what type of lock you would have. They could not cut through it. The 3/4 thick metal. Is so they could not twist the 1/4 rods off, or break it from what ever you have it bolted to. 1 Quote

hooah212002 Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 I've since updated my rig with bungee cords and more screws (screws, WD40 and Duct tape are your best friends. You should see how my headlight is held in place). I cut the styrofoam open a bit so the rods pop in and out easier while still being secure enough to not bounce around. I secured the bottom hook nice and tight so I can just whip off the top hook, grab and go without worrying about the bungee falling off.. Quote
