NMUbassin Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 How much braid do you usually put on your spinning reels? I just bought a 150 yard spool of 10lb power pro. Would you put all 150 yards on one reel, or would you use more backing and put it on a couple different reels? I plan to use a 10-15ft flouro leader. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Put 75 yds on 2 reels and use backing. Quote
NWBasslover Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I will put it all on my spoll, but I buy my line in bulk, much cheaper that way. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted April 26, 2014 Super User Posted April 26, 2014 I will put it all on my spoll, but I buy my line in bulk, much cheaper that way. Which braid do you use that is much cheaper in bulk? Quote
NWBasslover Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Fireline, but I also use it on almost a dozen rods. I go through a LOT of line when I re-spool everything! I have a local shop that gives me a break on it when I buy that much. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I only put about 100 ft on each spinning reel, i then use a 10-20 ft floro leader. i dont make long casts since they are just used for finesse tactics for me... Mitch 2 Quote

Mitch This is what I was thinking. It's mainly for my Drop Shot rod... Do you think that 75 yards a piece would be enough or would I be pushing it? Quote
NMUbassin Posted April 26, 2014 Author Posted April 26, 2014 And is it pretty much just a guessing game as to how much braid you actually put on. Just look and see when it looks like half the spool is gone? Quote

Do you think that 75 yards a piece would be enough or would I be pushing it? You could even go with 50 yds and fill 3 reels. I will put it all on my spoll, but I buy my line in bulk, much cheaper that way. Might as well put 30 yds of backing each time. it will add up over time. Quote
NWBasslover Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 aprw1, you are right, I probably should. Quote
TTS Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I always use backing when using braid. The way I do it is kind of a pain, but works good for making sure I have enough line for two or more reels. With a 150 or 300 yard spool, I measure out 75 yards of line. Rangefinder works good for this. I reel that on to the spool. Then tie on my backing and reel it on until full. Then I walk all the line off and reverse it. Can this way get two reels with a 150 yard spool or four with a 300 yard. Tom Quote

Super User Darren. Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 Some good answers here. I would say if you are leaning toward's what Mitch said and going for dropshotting, etc., then you don't need to "waste" an entire spool. Line it up with some mono backing, the spool on maybe 1/2 of the 150 yards. That plus you're leader and you should be plenty good-to-go. My .02. Quote
buzzfrog Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 i always have some backing on braid, but just the normal amount so it wont slip. braid close to the spool wont go bad, on fluro, since I am no 100% a fan and I heard the if you spool it all the way you waste a lot, I maybe 75 yds, oh wait sorry went a bit OT Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 As much as will fill the spool. oe Same here. I have been contemplating buying in bulk myself, I think the spools are 1500 yds. More for convenience and availability than cost savings. I've been noticing my local DSG has reduced the amount of lines they stock, in the sizes I use the spools are 100-150 yds, that isn't enough for me. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 You can also get a small line counter to maybe help. But 50 to 75 on each is great. Have done for years. When starts to get frayed or faded (I use yellow) I switch it over and use the back side. It's like new. This was can get two to three years or more off spools. Six or seven foot leader is good too.
