Onemeanduck Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Does anyone here do anything special with their tackle for upkeep? If you have a lure and the paint is rubbing off or rust is starting to form on the hooks and such, do you toss it out and get a new one? Or do you perform maintenance on them? Also when you get new tackle do you do anything to keep things like this and other things from happening? I am unsure if this has been asked before and if it has I apologize in advance I am just curious. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted April 26, 2014 Super User Posted April 26, 2014 I keep my tackle boxes open at home after each trip so things can't rust. My lures from 15 years ago still look new except for teeth marks on some of them. I keep my used salted plastics in zip loc bags seperate from my new plastics in a seperate tackle box. Salt mixed with moisture near my cranks rusts hooks in a closed tackle box. If there stored in the same tackle box. I use scents a lot and sometimes tackle boxes can get funky smelling. I wash my lures by soaking them in a dish soap pan. I pressure wash my tackle box. This gets done two or three times a season. But lately I'm using less scents amount wise. Quote
5fishlimit Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 If the hooks, or split rings, are rusty I will change them out. One thing you can do is throw one of those silica packets that are commonly included with electronics into your tackle box. Quote
frogflogger Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 There're some new (to me) anti rust plastic boxes out there - the ones I bought had blue dividers that prevented rust. Quote

tholmes Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Rusted hooks and split rings get replaced, If a lure gets dirty, I clean it. Minor paint rubs get ignored, but if a lot of paint is gone, I salvage the hooks and split rings (if they're good) and give the bodies to a friend who repaints them. Tom Quote
