JonBailey Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 A man I know claims that the Sacramento River is too polluted to catch quality food fishes from and the same goes for the Delta as a whole. I want fish that tastes good and are safe to eat.

The Delta is made up of several rivers and the Sacramento is one of them, this is a massive system teaming with wildlife and is also a wonderful fishery that has commercial fishing along with sport fishing. The largemouth bass fishing is world class as is the striped bass fishery. The fact fish are commercially caught and sold for human consumption should answer your question. Tom

He is also concerned that the rusty Navy mothball fleet has contaminated the Suisan Bay and that sewage is dumped into the Sacramento River. I am concerned about the pesticides and chemical fertilizers that run off into navigable Delta waters from farmland irrigation. It seems like salmon and trout caught out of northern California lakes and mountain rivers are going to be from cleaner waters than from Delta waters. Same goes for lake bass. I am concerned about water quality and QUANTITY during this drought episode for northern California inland fishing. I live in Sacramento County.

But, they are your concerns and important to you. You have to decide. I dont think anything we say will change your mind based on your posts above. You got the info from a"man you know". Is his info any better than anyone elses or just his opinion based on what? Thats my take.

Is his info any better than anyone elses or just his opinion based on what? Thats my take. I do know treated waste is dumped into the Sacramento River and the thought of that still grosses me out. I will probably just use the Delta waters for day cruising and not fishing, skiing or swimming and restrict my freshwater fishing to clear-running rivers, streams, lakes and reservoirs. The non-navigable shallow rivers of significant current will require waders or expensive jet boats, not prop-driven power boats, for angling. Because I, a flat lander, am prone to altitude sickness, I want to be no higher than 3,000 feet elevation in northern California for outdoor recreation. I suspect California fishing this coming season will be poor due to the record drought.

Im just not worried about it I guess. Maybe I should be tho. Im not gonna change. Hope you work it out for you.

Altitude sickness usually isn't a factor until you are in thin air about 7000 feet and a simple aspirin will solve that problem for the majority of the population. You do realize that animals die, urinate and escrement in prestige crystal clear running trout waters. The FDA keeps honest people health as well as any large agency can, would you be happier without any over sight, move to Mexico. Live life in fear or use reasonable caution and enjoy your time on earth, it's limited. Bye the way how high are the NorCal rivers running as we speak, the Sacramento was near capacity during what the politicians are calling a severe drought, the water wars are getting started again. I agree the snow pack is light and it is going to be a El Niño year according to most weather forecasts. California's population has more than doubled in the past 30 years, where do you think more water is coming from? Good luck. Tom
