Salamander12 Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I need to get a heavy rod for punching through weeds in the $50 price range. I was hoping someone with experience with either rod can help me figure out which one is a better heavy rod. Any input would be appreciated on these rods or any other in my price range. thanks. Quote

The Lightning rod Shock is definitely the more powerful of the two. Both rods are awfully slow and are pretty close to moderate in action. I guessing this is going to be a walmart purchase so check out the Diawa Jupiter. It's a Walmart exclusive Diawa rod that retails for $65. It's hard to beat a MH Abu Garcia Veritas for flipping but they run about $80. Quote

I need a heavy rod that I will use 10% of my time on the water so I dont want to spend more than $50 on a rod I won't use frequently. Quote

It is a fine rod, and very stiff. Abu rods tend to actually run slightly heavier than most other companies' ratings. The rod I own is a little heavy (weight wise), which is expected for a lower end 7'6" but its not bad. A great rod to flip with, lots of power, and a fast action. No experience with the Shock though. Super User ww2farmer Posted April 26, 2014 Super User Posted April 26, 2014 I have had both, IMHO, flip a coin. Both are decent rods for $50, but look around and you might find a Vendetta for close to the same money, they are better than both of those. Quote

I've seen people say that but Ive looked around and i can't find a vendetta in that price range Quote
georgeyew Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I've seen the Berkley Shock 7'6 H at BPS and it is a pretty stout rod. I have the 7' MH and it is a pretty tough rod. I can only imagine what it would take to snap the H. Quote

I've fished with both and the Vengeance is definitely lighter in power than a M Lightning Rod Shock. I'm assuming this translates to the heavier powers. Quote
wisconsin heat Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 It's the 7'6 vengeance heavy at tw I have the older model, it is rated a MH. It is probably the same blank with a different (corrected) rating. Its a solid rod, plenty stout enough. If you have the chance, hold them in store to see which you like better. Quote
Knightiac Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I've had both and I'd say the vengeance - hands down. The lightning rod has an odd tip, almost seems moderate. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 The shock is made for braid thats why the tip is forgiving even in a h action Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 I use shocks they do all i need done Quote
LivewellHero Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Out of those two, Vengeance. But, I had one (before I got more expensive gear) which eventually crapped on me. The tip guide's insert cracked and frayed my line all the time to the point where I couldn't use it anymore. I busted the tip off and put a new Fuji one on it and sold the rod to a friend. Like I said, I have more expensive gear now, but I do own a Daiwa Aird ($50-55). I love it, and it gets as much use as all of my other rods. No lie, if you didn't know the price you'd think it's more expensive than it is. Best $50 rod out there IMO. Also, there are no inserts in its guides to worry about. Quote
