Choosylobster Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Hey everyone I am very happy that I found this fishing forum! I have a question to ask you avid fishermens. I started going to a park called Wolf lake park here in Davie FL and there is a lot of peacock bass. Now I can't seem to hook one no matter what I use! I went to bass pro yesterday and I bought some rapala x-rap lure. One of the associates that works for bass pro suggested those lures for peacocks. I went super excited back to the park hoping I was going to finally catch some of those badboys and I had no luck. The peacocks would just swim by the lure and some were even scared. The water conditions are pretty clear you could actually see the fish swimming but they dont hit the lure. Can you guys share the secret on how to hook one of these badboys. Thanks, the depth of the water really depends on what area of the park you're in but ill say 3-5 shallow and 10-15 in other parts. I was so frustrated yesterday after not catching a peacock that a finally gave in and put a worm and i caught this beauty. My target fish is the peacock not bass. Quote

I've caught peas at the same park on kvd 1.5s and kvd sexy dawg top waters. I would hittem with some traps and red eyed shads. Ive been catching peas elsewhere on them. You may also want to try small jigs you get from walmart that look like flys or buy some live bait. Theres a bait and tackle store down the street you can get live bait from if needed. Quote

I been reading and people are saying that the bucktail jigs are really good for peacocks. I will be going to walmart tomorrow to see what I could find. The live bait is out of the picture for me I like to use fake lure to catch my fish. What color do you suggest me to get for the kvd? Quote

I used sexy shad but maybe try some fire tigers or something bright to have some variety. The red eye shad should annoy them also buzzing by or being yoyo'd. I used the gold color with great success. The water there is pretty blue/clear so it should reflect well and visibility should be great. I know my friend was killing some on x raps in white/ghost minnow but that was in miami. The small jigs I used were in lime green and the hooks are so small that the fish inhale the whole thing. Ive also picked up some smaller peas on rooster tails and spinner baits, the 1 dollar walmart variety in 1/4 oz. I may try to hit some pea spots tomorrow or sunday myself. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted April 26, 2014 Super User Posted April 26, 2014 One thing I've learned over the years I've been catching peacocks, the harder and more violent you work the lure, the better your shot will be at getting a solid bite. Peacocks like quick movements and flash. The x-raps can and do catch them. Definitely a good purchase for Peacocks in our area. 1 Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 I've caught more peacocks on crappie jigs than about anything. As of late the peas in my area have been very lethargic. I like clear water so I can spot them, I drag and shake the jig on the bottom, it does take a while to get a strike. Inline spinners or spinnerbaits can work well too. Quote
doyle8218 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 My top Peacock baits have been: Heddon Torpedo - Red Shore Minnow & G Fleck Blue Shore Minnow Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow - Bleeding Redhead & Bunker Flash Quote
Diggy Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Went today to the lake I fish and we caught 7 between 2 of us on rattle traps. My buddy caught 3, his 1st time ever and one of them was a hog, swallowed the whole trap. One trap was silver and chartreuse(buddy) and the other was blueberry perch (mine) Quote
Choosylobster Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 Went fishing today and I finally caught some peacock bass. The bass pic was in January. Quote
Pritch13 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 What lure did you end up catching them on? Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted January 11, 2016 Super User Posted January 11, 2016 Rapala X-Raps are excellent lures for Peacock Bass. 1 Quote
Frise Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I really like to use heddon torpedoesfor peacock bass. Another bait I like to use for them is a KVD strike king square bill crankbait or a strike King jig with a crawdad on it. Quote
