grid Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Bought a few new traps a couple days ago at Sportsman Warehouse. Took them out of the plastic box to show my son and the paint was chipping off. Bad batch or does this tend to happen alot. Quote
bocabasser Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 i have never had the paint chip off right out of the box, but i have had the paint come off after catching a bunch of fish. i have over 20 traps, but i always throw the same one that has been beaten up. when i get home tonight i will post a pic to show you what i mean. Shakes Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Yea. Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps have probably the worst paint when it comes to chips among all other lipless cranks. Spend the extra 1 to get the better one. You'll be suprised at the difference. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 10, 2007 Super User Posted April 10, 2007 If you are concerned about "quality components, craftmanship or quality contol" look elsewhere. The Rat-L-Trap is often on sale for $1.99 and sometimes 99 cents. They are not going to spend any money improving these lures. However, whether the paint chips off or not, these baits are proven bass magnets! If you want a better looking lure and top-of-the-line hooks, Yo-Zuri RatlN' Vibes, Drum and the Lucky Craft LV series are for you. Although I personally prefer the higher end lures, I still fish Rat-L-Traps and they are VERY effective. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 10, 2007 Super User Posted April 10, 2007 Any traps y'all have that are red, orange, or gold/black back/orange belly & don't want just mail em to me I'll even pay shipping! Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 10, 2007 Super User Posted April 10, 2007 I have some older traps and you can feel the difference in the paint from the new ones. The only traps that I have had chip and flake off though have been the chrome w/ blue back. They seem to be flaking off just from casting them. Quote

Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted April 10, 2007 Super User Posted April 10, 2007 I like to think of beat up lures as trophies of memorable trips. I will probably retire this lure from last Monday. One of my most enjoyable trips ever. Brand new $3.00 Rat-l-trap ..... 50+ bass and a big ol' catfish : > ...... less than $.06 a fish. Bargain!!!!! Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted April 10, 2007 Super User Posted April 10, 2007 I have found that the more paint I take off the Rat-l-Trap the better it catches fish. I have a few colors that I take out of the box and rub them down with steel wool to take some of the paint off. With that said. Rat-l-Trap has had a problem with keeping the paint on their lures. It started sometime last year and I have heard they are working on the problem. Quote
ben watson Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 i have a couple of old rattle traps that were wierd colors, so i broke out the red and black sharpies and some clear spray paint, and made them look brandy new, now they look like the same color they were using on bassmasters, i did have to do two coats, when you spray the clear coat just spray it very lightly so the colors dont run, then the second coat can be applied as much as you want Quote
