Today I was fishing and got a bite under a pier. I set the hook and snap. I retied thinking I had a nick in my line and pitched back under the dock. This time I could feel my line was over something and I went to reel in. Once again snap with hardly any pressure on the line. I moved on down the line of piers when a guy came down and started talking to me. I told him about the break offs and he said the owner screws old band saw blades between the pylons to keep people from fishing under his dock. Have any of you ever come across someone trying to keep you from fishing their docks on public lakes?

Yes, but not by doing that…..  sounds like a dangerous move if kids ever start to swim around that dock.

Dumb and selfish

Yeah. Like everything else....There are those fisherman that are disrespectful and cause us all to look that way.....Just like jerry bike riders give all bikers bad name. Not really....but you get it.

That sucks ,I hope he never trips on his dock and fall in.

Some dock owners get very upset at fishermen.  I have seen ropes and sheet metal protecting docks from lures.  Also one man ran out onto his dock to get a mouthful of words out at me.  After I invited him onto my boat he stopped yapping.  I reminded him of maritime laws, piracy, and what would happen to him if he boarded.  I was fishing past his pier and just make a cast or two under his pier without causing any harm.  Generally, I just move along and apologize but when someone is rude, it's ok to remind them that the water and fish don't belong to the dock owner.

He kept saying he was callin th. Dnr n blah blah. Go ahead buddy, what your doin is called harrassment. He shut rite up, an we kept fishin docks.

The saw blade thing is over the top, report it.

I wonder what would cause a dock owner to take such drastic actions?

It's possible that he thinks that he owns that water and the fish under that dock.  It could also be possible that he's just plain tired of digging hooks out of his dock or boat, or hearing sinkers bouncing off of them.  Maybe one of his children or grandchildren stepped on one of those hooks that a fishermen left for him to find.

It sure is hard to figure out why some dock owners act the way they do.

I can understand the boat point but I really don't think this guy owns one. The saw blades weren't around the edge pylons, they were up under the dock about 2 ft. As for the hooks, I can understand that too but the blades cause people to leave more hooks.

I would have moved on if he simply put up a sign. Instead I'm ticked because I have $5 or so of tungsten weights, hooks and baits under his dock.

haha he sounds like a very nice guy. probably why he has saw blades under the dock to take extra precaution nobody invades his privacy lmao!! how strong do you think those saw blades are? if its a good dock that holds nice bass. maybe get  a bigger set-up with a steal leader , i mean a HEAVY ROD and a strong reel. and bend those suckers or rip them off!

but if the dock is crappy. just throw some bird seed on it , hopefully some geese or birds come through and crap all over it!

There are so many of these types of people and it always blows my mind- also the effort it must take to be such a curmudgeon!

I'm not sure that there is legally anything that can be done, but I'd report it anyway.

I respect other peoples property and give them plenty room. I don't go up and just start fishing, as I've seen other people. I respect their privacy, just as I would want mine respected.

I while back, and I can't remember where, I guy was fishing on a river and some property owner told him to stop that it was his property. According to the law, the river was NOT the land owners and the other guy had the right to fish there. The fisherman argued and the land owner got ticked and shot and killed the fisherman. Now, who's the fool? Right or wrong, that guy will never fish again. My object is always be able to fish another time.

This is the reason I give people and their property plenty of room. I want to be able to fish tomorrow.

There are laws against interfering with the capture of fish and game. And ovbiously they do not own the water on public lakes.

I still say try your hardest to respect these peoples space and property. I dont mean dont dock fish, just dont pitch to targets like trampolines and waterslides, and if the folks are out playing in there back yard it doesnt hurt to say hello before you start throwing at their dock. I know a lot of guys disagree with me here, I even know a guy that keeps a copy of the DNR on his boat and is almost looking for an argument most of the time. Its embarassing.

Anyone who has dock fished has left a hook or lure in a dock, I have left many, and this is what these poeple are angry about. As a kid, I grew up in the water hanging off docks and got cut up a couple times from rusted hooks. Many parents (parents that are smarter than you and I :wink2:) are not immunizing their children so a rusted hook could be a serious injury.

In all honesty I would love to hear what would happen if that guy was reported. There is no way that is legal. If its a public lake I would go for it.

There is a lake in my area that I fish that only has a public launch for fishermen only. Its the only launch on the lake. I have to buy a new key and register my boat and truck with the comittee. There is a contract and in it it states you need to stay 10 feet away from docks.( casting )

Of course I fish the docks though. : )

I've seen docks wrapped with chicken wire around the perimeter with a couple large holes in it .

I've heard of people running people off from fishing under their docks.

Typically if u see large gatherings of people or something like that, ill skip that dock, or ill get back far enough I have to make a long roll cast to the corners and to the front

Not sure on its legality.  I'd report it to the police or Conservation.  Or both.

I bet he drives his boat from his dock and fishes someone else's dock.

I too skip docks with families or groups using them and actually will troll out and and around those docks giving them their space (respect).........and when I come upon a dock with someone on it I say hi in a friendly manner and engage in very small talk if they start talking. If there is any kind of confrontational behavior on thier part.......I just say 'sorry.....I understand'.......skip their dock and fish on.....there have been a couple of times when that response has caused the other person to apologize and say it was ok to fish their dock. Either way not worth your life...or anyone elses.

My grandfather did something similar with his docks when I was a kid. He didn't use blades, but he basically put up heavy duty lattice from the side of his dock down to the bottom of the water.

He was fed up with fisherman hitting his boat and breaking off their hooks on his dock or in the 'swimming area' where he (and his grandkids) could step on them. He really wasn't trying to be a jerk, he was just tired of people messing up his stuff.

Two years ago I was skipping a dock when an older woman came out to tell me to get away from her pier.  I very politely told her I could fish the water without touching her dock.  Well, she went off on me and started toughing stones.  When her aim improved I moved off to a safe distance to call the DNR.  When I explained the incident to them they asked if I wanted to file a complaint and I said all I wanted was to have her properly educated as to the laws.  The woman at the DNR said she understood and asked for my info and GPS location; she said they would have an officer in the area stop by to talk with the woman.  Well, I never heard anymore about it and have cautiously fished that dock several time since without incident; but have no idea what if anything was done.

I've also had a man at another location come out to video me while I was fishing his dock, which made me feel very self conscious.  Later a friend remarked that "the guy was probably waiting for me to make a hit on anything so he could take action against me for damages to his sky boat".

I'm at the point that if I see someone come out to watch me, or complain, I just give them a military salute and move away.  I've got too much other water to fish, and it's not worth getting into a ticking contest with someone over a few casts.

IMHO
