I've been around for several new moons and have heard or read many wife's tales concerning fishing, but here are three new ones I hadn't stumbled across before... enjoy

After handling gasoline, wash your hands with sugar.

After applying insect repellant, wash your hands with salt.

Smallmouth excrete a chemical from their skin that smells like crawfish and entices crawfish to reveal themselves while investigating for the intruder.

Add your own favorite fishing wife's tale.

No bananas on a boat

Darnit! That was the first thing i thought of!

When the wind blows from the north, do not go forth, when the wind blows from the east, the fish bite the least, when the wind blows from the south, it blows bait into the fishes mouth, when the wind blows from the west, the fish bite the best.

Don't let a fish go in the area you caught it, it will go tell it's buddies not to bite your lure.

Under a full moon, you can dig a hole but can't refill it with the dirt you took out.... It won't be enough

My grandmother always said if the cows were all laying down the fish weren't biting!

I've always heard it had something to do with the barometric pressure and that there is a connection or something - I could be way off! Ha!

Mostly the moon.  Free range cattle are very similar to other wild animals.  If the weather is normal and stable, the moon has the biggest effect on feeding times.  Lake Kissimmee is completely surrounded by the largest cattle ranch in the US.  If you are near the shore on the 35K acre lake you can see cows.  If they are laying down, it is going to be a long day.

During the dog days of summer, the muskies lose their teeth.  That's why you can't catch them at that time of the year.

Don't ever, and I mean don't you ever, catch a fish on the first cast of the day. Something evil is happening. Just pack up and go home. I now make my first cast on the boat ramp into my live well.

Swampstud, This thread is a listing of " old wives tales" not reality.  We're just having fun with all the old ideas or I guess ideals that fishermen had years ago. Although, the bananas thing if sort of new, and dumb.

As stupid as this one sounds, it sure seems to be that way! I don't remember the pro angler, but I remember reading somewhere his first cast of the day is about 5' just to ensure he doesn't catch a fish.

No whistling on the boat while fishing...

Never step on a boat with your left foot...

Never, Ever change the name of a boat without paying homage to King Neptune

(Scratch the new name onto a piece of metal and throw it off the bow)

??? this one makes the most sense of them all.....banana bunches used to hold tarantulas, the bananas would be in the bottom of the boat and the passengers would sleep in the hold below deck as well. The spiders would become active at night and bite the crew while the slept. Many resulting in death.....not new or dumb IMO

Differences between superstition, myths or wives tails; bringing bad luck is superstitious, beliefs based on myths are wives tails. If we were able to separate myth from fact, anglers would have little to talk about!

I thought the bananna thing came from peels on the deck of the boat and causing a slipping hazard.

Len22, How many fishermen you know, lay bunches of bananas on the bottom of their boat, fresh from South America. This is an "old wives tales" thread. Ya know like, "wind from the west, fish bite best" not where did the logic of no "bananas" in the boat came from. I believe, this was supposed to be a fun thread not a gotcha thread.
