dday07 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 does anyone else have problems setting the hooks with ika's?i use a medium heavy rod so backbone is no problem.the last time i caught one i ended up on my back! LOL! Quote
jignfule Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 What size hook are you using?? My ratio increased when I went to a larger hook, 4/0 at least. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 6, 2011 Super User Posted March 6, 2011 Try the standard Gamakatsu 4/0 Offset Worm Hook, not the heavy wire recommended for super lines. 8-) Quote
WanderLust Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I use a Gammy EWG 3/0 with no issues. I use a fast reel, 6'8 MH F rod & braided line. The hook is skinned so its t-rigged but sitting flat on the outside of the bait. Quote

Easily the best rod I've ever fished. I've also use a St. Criox Avid AVC70MHF which is awesome but like the shorter rod for this one. Fat IKA is my go to bait. Quote

Sorry to confuse you wonderlust, but the question was directed towards dday07...I'm guessing that is his problem if he is having hook set issues.. Quote
WanderLust Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 LOL ;D I misread that one... A soft tip rod or mono etc can certainly cause hookset issues. Quote
MNGeorge Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 We use the 4/0 Gammie EWG offset, but the superline ones...hooksets have not been an issue at all. Quote
holeshot Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Gotta love those Ika's....I use a 4/0 EWG and have not had a problem on hookset....I mainly use the 4 inch IKA and rig it upside down :....with the tentacles pointing up near the hook eye and zero weight... mainly fish in in relative shallow water (2 to 6 feet) and it seems to fall at the right speed...plus yu can cast or pitch it a mile...lotta big girls have fallen to that little jewel... ;D Quote
