Tim Kelly Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 I just bought the extended package and am loving the shows. One question though, what's up with the marshals? Are they not allowed to enjoy themselves or something? If I were doing it I'd be getting as excited as the anglers when they were on a roll. Those guys barely bust a smile. 1 Quote
Fishing_Cory Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Are you watching the most current one or some of the older ones? Iv'e watched every extended cast multiple times and I agree, 99% of the time those refs are pretty stone cold which I guess thats there job but still. There are a few times where they joke around though and get excited over a bigger fish. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 My guess is that the marshals are under instruction to be low profile on camera and to keep the air of respectability to the contest. Over all I like the format a lot: every fish counts, penalties assessed for rough handling of fish, immediate weigh and release near zero mortality. Also the unknown waters. All makes for a good show IMO 5 Quote
frantzracing0 Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 in my opinion this is the best competitive format out there. I love it! Quote
McAlpine Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 It is a great show. My favorite part is that the competitors given the format and winner take all, small pool of competitors, live and die each day, etc... They really really look like they want it bad. and I mean BAD. It's awesome to see these guys just killin it to win. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted April 24, 2014 Super User Posted April 24, 2014 I saw one a few weeks ago where the eventual winner Jeff Kriet was mad at the marshall for calling a penalty when one of his fish hit his body. It wasn't a close call, Kriet knew he'd done it, but was mad at the marshall for doing what he is there to do. I was shocked he called the guy out while the cameras were on him. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted April 24, 2014 Super User Posted April 24, 2014 I would prob be the same way on some days gotta think if they are affiliated with MLF they must enjoy fishing so to watch a guy fish all day must be frustrating that you can't wet your line as well lol. And I am sure the angler wants to focus so he doesn't want you to be asking questions and picking his brain all day, gotta respect the angler, eventhough I'm sure some anglers are a lot more pleasant to be around than others Quote

That was sarcasm from the "Squirrel". He was not serious. I have watched the extended cast on all of them so far. Watching how they make decisions has been the best part. They are on camera so much that you really get to see the thought process behind the decisions. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted April 24, 2014 Super User Posted April 24, 2014 It's a great show. I also purchase the extended cast. It keeps me sane over the winter. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted April 24, 2014 Super User Posted April 24, 2014 I'd love to be a marshall. Learn from a pro and get paid. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 24, 2014 Super User Posted April 24, 2014 Absolutely the best competition on the circuit. I really enjoy watching it. The FLW tour program I do not like. Especially how they handle the fish. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 24, 2014 Super User Posted April 24, 2014 Absolutely the best competition on the circuit. I really enjoy watching it. The FLW tour program I do not like. Especially how they handle the fish. x2 ~ Just like the old Bassmaster series, where all the fish where photographed dead and nailed to a board, the days of the "Boat Flip" on to the deck of the boat are numbered. At least on broadcasted tournaments. Yanking the bass out, it's flopping on the deck, the angler throws down his tackle as he dances over the fish; the whole "act" reeks of disrespect for the resource. I'm hoping that sooner rather than later, someone with some dignity & self respect who is in the position to change this, will do so. A-Jay Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted April 24, 2014 Super User Posted April 24, 2014 People watch the show for the angler at the front of the boat. As others have said I guarantee they are instructed to keep a low profile. I would suspect there are quiet periods where the marshalls chat and maybe joke around with the angler but it doesn't make it to the cut (tv or extended). Quote
hoyt-tec2011 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 i love the set up of the show. Its something you can go out and do with your own friends. I have seen somewhere they have an app out now for it that you can keep track like they do on the show and have little tournaments with your friends. Its the average fishermans tournaments. Not all of us can go out and catch five three pounders in a day or have a large bass boat to keep them in a livewell. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted April 24, 2014 Super User Posted April 24, 2014 If one of the marshals jumped up and started celebrating it'd be like a ref celebrating at the end of a basketball game when someone hits a buzzer beater. They're doing their jobs, their refs they're supposed to remain subjective. Quote
redux Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I have the Lake Istokpoga series on DVD and watch it regularly. The goofy stuff they do is fun to watch, but I keep coming back because I learn more every time I watch an episode. Quote
