3-Power Dobyns Rod Question + Bonus Questions

So I don't know a heck of a lot about Dobyns rods, but I have a Savvy 703 and I like it. I like it so much that I would like to upgrade it to a Champ or Champ Extreme 3-power.

 

I'd like opinions on the differences between the Champ 683, Champ Extreme 683, Champ 703, Champ Extreme 703, and Champ 733. Champ Extreme 743 is out because of small Toyota; 733 might be pushing it as is.

 

Primary techniques would be Senkos, 1/4 jig + trailer, small Texas rigs, and open water swim jigging. Secondary techniques would be the occasional 3/8 oz spinnerbait, jerkbait, soft plastic swimbait, and topwater.

 

The rod will most likely be paired with a Chronarch 51E. I'm really leaning toward the Champ Extreme 683 because 1. full handle and 2. small car, but I appreciate all the input I can get. Dobyns is currently the only brand I am considering for this rod upgrade.

Bonus question 1: Anyone have a Champ Extreme 701C? How do you like it? I'm still dreaming about casting 3/16 oz Shap Raps.

 

Bonus question 2: I'm looking at a Champ 682SF to learn to drop shot and shakeyhead with. Any circumstances where you'd go to a 3 power rod?

I have no idea where to start with which question but for the intended techniques, get a 3 power. If the 733 is pushing the limits, the 703 would be fine. there isn't a different in taper. As you go down in series (DX down to savvy) the tapers get slower in their respective counterparts. i.e 743->733->733. Not much slower but once you use all the series of rods in the same power, you will see the difference and, personally, I feel that's a good thing. 

 

Get the DX703

a 3 power casting rod is more equivalent to a 2 power spinning rod..most of the time..if that makes sense.

I have a DX 703. It is a great rod for fishing alot of baits. I like to cap mine at no more than a 1/2 oz. That 3/8 oz is mark is the sweetspot for me. Lots of baits fish well on it like jigs, senkos, caffeine shads, flukes, spinnerbaits, topwater, some cranks, bigger jerkbaits. It is a very versatile rod like its 743 brother. If you keep your 703 savy use it for your reaction baits and move the DX 703 for all your contact and feel baits.

your intended targety baits are perfect for the 3 power..... I will always suggest the longer in the better.

 

Bonus question 1: the DX is overkill to be throwing a moving bait.... how about a 1 or 2 power spinning?

on casting gear that light you need a really good reel.... my 3/16 shakyhead are thrown on a core50

Bonus question 2: I throw my shakeheads on a 742DX casting and a dropshot on a 742DX spinning. so you are good there I would think.

I dont throw both on the same rod (DX 702), but you could.  

 

The 2 power makes a great open water dropshot rod, but a 3 power will work just fine if you want something more versatile. Both the 2 and 3 power have a great tip, in both series, champ and DX.

 

The 2 power tip is just the ticket for working light baits without moving the weight.. its the better choice if you're gonna throw light shakeys. 

 

When you start tossing heavier stuff: shakeyheads/tubes/light jigs, you'll appreciate the extra backbone the 3 power provides and itll handle hard jerks and topwaters too. 

 

I say get the 682 for a dedicated DS setup and grab a 3 power for the laundry list.

i have champ extreme 703C for senkos, small t rigs, currently it has a 3/8 oz white spinerbait on it, it fishes it great. great rod.

 

i also have a 682SF ive only dropshotted with it, it excels greatly at that, a shakey head depending on how its rigged might be too much, might want to bump up to a 3 power for that.
