St Croix Legend Xtreme Vs G Loomis Nrx

You alright fellas. Looking at importing a st croix legend xtreme to the uk for fishing jigs with soft plastics for European perch on canals and rivers but after import taxes etc it works out the same money as the g loomis nrx and I'm not really bothered to much with warranty with regards to which company is better and considering the fresh water perch over here get to 6lb + which would be the better rod to purchase with regards to sensitivity? Fast or xtra fast action? Spinning or casting in a 6'6" to 7'2" lure weights of 7g to 21g? Am buying blind as don't have access to view in person as we are limited to top American rod brands in the uk so look forward to your views Ok fellas.

I'd go with a NRX 853C (7'1) for that application.  It is a MH-XF action, and should be able to handle the range.  If you are looking for something 6'8, go with the 803.

 

I have both, and the 803 is my do-it-all rod....but I fish water fairly shallow <15 feet...most of the time.

Depth wise I will be fishing 3-8 ft canals and 5-16 ft rivers so is your recommendations still the same tartan or would in need something different? Fast or xtra fast fella?

The 803 and 853 are both MH/XF.   

 

I prefer casting, but it is only a preference.  I like the 803 more for casting to tighter targets, and the 853 more for deeper water....but they are both terrific rods.

NRX 853 or 893. flip and coin and enjoy.

Not to confuse the issue; the new Loomis GLX 853 JWR would be a good choice; 3 power not as stiff as the NRX , easier casting, great sensitivity and rated to 31/6 to 5/8 oz jig weights, 10-16 lb line, right in your wheel house.

Save $100 and this rod will perform for you.

I have never fished an NRX rod, so I can't speak to them, but I have the new model St Croix Legend Xtreme 7'1" MHXF casting rod and I can't even imagine you needing anything better.  I've fished several G Loomis GLX rods, and like the St Croix a bit better.  That said, I also can't imagine you going wrong with an NRX.

If you want to save coin the GLX 853 or 893 can work for what you are asking.  Own both and they are just awesome.  I've tried an Extreme but to me I just didn't like the power/action of it in the same range when comparing them to a Loomis, Shimano or Fenwick.  It felt too stiff and it seemed to be underrated.  Of course that is all personal preference though.

The GLX has K-series Ti-SiC guides, the NRX has a mix with a couple SIC and mostly recoils. GLX has a proprietary seat similar to the Fuji ECS, NRX has a skeleton seat....they're hardly the same.

My Extreme rods are better built then my NRX IMO,  as in quality control and components. Both are light rods and sensitive. I like the build quality of the Extreme rod much more and the KR guides on the Extremes are way better then my NRX.  Just waiting for the new Elites to come out

I preferred everything about the Extreme as well, except the handle. I like a longer handle and the taper felt funky. Also wish St Croix would trim the threads above the locking nut. Makes it look a lot cleaner.

Does anyone know when the new st croix legend elites/extremes are out and is it worth waiting for the newer models?

Is there any difference between elites and extremes other than the handles?

With regards to the glx im not to bothered about saving money really as i want the best rod possible but cheers for the heads up on the newer glx models fellas aye.

Does any body know when the new nrx is out and with the nrx being stiffer as some have said what are the advantages/disadvantages to this?

Both the elites and xtremes are out.  If you can find the older models at a little cheaper rate that would be the way to go.  The main difference between the 2 are the elites have full cork vs the xtremes have split grips and are not cork.

If you want to step up to the next level look Megabass Destroyer X7 series rod.

I don't believe the NRX is rugged enough to handle shore fishing and doesn't cast as easily as the GLX because of the way this rod loads up with the lighter 1/4-3/8 oz jigs.

I fish with state of the art custom ALX jig & worm rods that IMO are as good as NRX, PM and I will give you the details.

On tackle tour they had a discussion about the most sensitive rods you have fished. There was pages of responses. Outside of custom rods built on some of the best blanks there was an overwhelming amount of NRX responses. I own an NRX and do believe it to be an extremely sensitive rod. I also find that the casting distance is incredible with the right reel. I haven't fished many St. Croix rods to be able to compare the two so I wont be able to say which is better.

Since it sounds like money isn't a huge factor and performance is of high importance, you could always have a custom built to your liking.

If you do buy an NRX a Rep sample is a good choice as they often are under $400 for essentially a new rod.
