Rick Clunn Sunday and he said he that he always changes the trebles on his 1.5 or 2.5

Why would he design a bait then change the trebles out of the box? If the design was wrong then why wouldn't he make that change?

I'll bet it's a contractual issue. Perhaps Clunn likes Owner, but Lucky Craft has a contract in place to use Daiichi-sharpened VMC hooks.

What does everyone use to replace size 5 trebles on some of the LC baits (like Pointer 100s)?

Actually, Owner started marketing the #5 size hook.

Thanks, I saw them tonight when I went to Dicks. Size 5 is difficult to find.

I'm lazy and many of my trebles are down to 1 or 2 hooks, I leave them that way on purpose.  I like my fish hooked only on 1 lip, not both, same reason I prefer siwash hooks for my spoons.

I almost always change my out to red VMC short shank hooks. I've never had a problem with fish bending those hooks and they're really sharp and seem to stay that way for me. Gamakatsu and Owners are just too expensive for me, maybe if I was tourny fishing I'd be more concerned about it but not just fun fishing.

the bending of the vmc hooks come from smallies for me. losing big girls because i get my topwater or crank back and the treb is bent out so far it looks like its giving me the middle finger ;D i learned my lesson using junk hooks that way, besides realizing how much better quality hooks stick fish and get landed compared.

i don't tourny fish and fish for fun as well but i also fish to catch fish, not lose fish. to me there is nothing fun about losing a fattie cuz of crapper hooks on my hard baits.

about 7 bucks for around a dozen gammy ewg trebs is bout the price of one rapala crank. you can upgrade 5-6 hardbaits for a pak, not that much of an expense if you ask me.

Maybe it's the regular shank hooks you've tried? I use the VMC short shanks and catch a lot of wipers on them up to the 8-9 pound range and have never had one straighten, even having to clamp the drag down to keep them out of trees and cables. I get the short shanks VMC hooks for 7 bucks for a 25 pack and I change my hooks a lot. Only being able to do 5-6 baits when you change hooks on your go-to baits every few trips gets expensive!  :(

If the bait has quality hooks and I want that size I leave the stock hooks

If the hook is not razor sharp ( checking how "sticky" the are ) I change them.

If I want to change the bouyancy ( something I normally do with Shad Raps ) I change the stock hooks for the next size up.

If the hooks show the slightes amount of rust I change them

That's sums up my approach as well. I also don't care a lot for chrome color hooks when fishing clear water, bronze seems to be the least noticeable.

For all of you that change your hooks, how do you know what size the hooks are? I've never changed treble hooks but have a few lures that I need to do so with, I just have no idea what size hooks to get

Just bring the bait to the store, and match them up by eye.  After a while, you just know what each size is by looking.

i have a couple, the strike king lures i have come with junk hooks, but im not wasting extra cash on more trebles, so first i sharpen the stock hooks myself use the stock hooks for a while and when they get dull, i swap them out for whatever i feel like spending on for whatever style of hook i need, brand isnt important. I only have about maybe 6 or 7 hardbaits that i use alot, among them are a few lc's  ( no exchange needed) and others which i swap out the back hook with a sureset hook.

i dont care what other people say about vmc, its sharp enough for me.

Once I have caught a bunch of fish on a crankbait, it gets 'promoted' to the elite box and gets a set of Mustad KVD elite trebles.  The elite box only has my top producing crankbaits.  I'm not going to bother changing hooks on a bait until it has proven itself.  lol, it has to earn them.
