Lead Jig/weight Making Help

I just started to make jigs and weights. only have a football jig mold and bullet weight for now.  The biggest 2 questions i have are: 1- with the brown powder i bought its really hard to get consistent coloring and most of the times its really dark.  i am just heating the jig and dipping it then knocking it off.  what better ways are there to this?   and second what really is the best paint for jigs: powder or actual paint?  i went with powder for simplicity.

The brown color you have is called copperhead, the thing with those colors of powder paint is you have to really shake the jar after 2 or 3 jigs because the flake will settle. Using a fluid bed will help you with consistency but until you get one try finding a wide shallow bowl that you can put the powder in and when you heat your jig or weight, you can give it a quick swish thought the paint, that will help as well with consistency. Actual paint is harder to do because you need a white base coat or primer put on then when it dries you add your color and then you add a clear on top to keep it from chipping too quickly, also, the best non powder for jigs is vinyl and the fumes may cause severe headaches if not done in an extremely good ventilated area.

Like smalljaw mentioned, that is not an opaque brown it is a candy brown with green glitter (copperhead). If you want it lighter don't heat the jig as hot and swish it through the powder paint faster. By doing this you will get less powder to stick to the hot jig making it lighter. You will also get less green glitter. This will take some practice, but it can be done very easily.

Yea im def in agreeance that the powder is easier. Heat, dip, bake and done. The brown as it was shown on bass pros website was much lighter. The green flakes are always there which is nice but i am having trouble getting consistancy. I think the shallow bowl over using the container is a good idea. In trying to think of a way to mist it with the powder. The blue is very easy and bright every time. The whole processes of molding and painting with powder is very easy, my 10 yr old has made a few for our trip tomorrow.

I used to dip my jigs in powder coat, but now I've went to powder coat airbrushing for a little smoother and a thinner coat. It's a little harder with the smaller jig heads but I can combine colors on my jigs fairly easily and my airbrush paint station can run 4 different colors at one time. I really like to use multiple colors on my jig heads and the airbrush powder coating helps me with that.

What kind of air brush do you use? Is it special to be able to blow the powder? I would imagin that this is also easier to clean than one when using paint.

I also have a 4 sprayer manifold and I run 4 sprayers to do multi-colors on my jigs. You get a nice even thin coat and there's no buildup so you don't have to punch out hook eyes. I run my sprayers at 20 psi and they work great.
