I've done some searches, and understand you can melt down vaseline and add scent oils of choice. However, this winter I've gotten into pouring my own plastics. I really like the idea of coffee scent, and put a couple drops with worm oil into my packaged products.

However, I plan on fishing with some larger plastic swimbaits this season, and had a few questions regarding lube. I understand Megastrike is definitely a crowd favorite, and for good reason, because it works.

I guess I'm interested in making my own because I have nothing better to do while the ice melts  :)

I thought making a vaseline based coffee scent would also hold better on jigs.

Would the vaseline have any adverse effect on a soft-swimbait?

Thanks,

JP

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know how bass would respond to fresh, minced up garlic that is marinated in Vaseline compared to other scents on the market.

Just a random, disorganized thought regarding your subject.  I once fished with a guy when I was a newbie in my local club.  At the start of the tournament, he said, "You'll find that fish the way most of the guys do, excep I use Preparation H".  This started my brain whirling, thinking "I use preparation too but I never connected it to catching fish".  Finally I asked him about it and explained that he spread it on his plastics to keep them from "drying out".  I later learned that one of the ingredients of Preparation H is shark oil or something like that.  You might want to try one batch with this - knowing that it has other uses if the outcome isn't what you are looking for.

I know a guy who chops up a bunch of night live crawlers, and puts them in a freezer bag with his plastics. If prep-h works, i guess you could try anything. KY sensations?

Haven't tried it with vasoline but I soaked some plastics in a mixture of X-brand liquid attractant, minced garlic powder, and sea salt. I took them out a week later, rinsed them off, and let them dry. The scent stayed with them for a little while but it wasn't worth the mess and smelling like a fresh garlic clove for about 24 hours. IMHO it did make the garlic scent much stronger and last longer than most garlic flavored liquid attractants I've tried. However, after finally getting around to trying MegaStrike, I now leave the garlic in the kitchen. I'm a believer.

I remember reading once that fish don't like sweet taste at all, and they like garlic and table salt only marginally more than sweet. The article went on to explain that the salts they were after were those that were most similar to their natural prey. IE: fish proteins and the like.

It also had some information regarding the fact that bass almost can't define oil based smells.

The article was from Keith Jones, I think, and Robert Montgomery. Montgomery says something about it in his book, too.
