Super User flyfisher Posted April 17, 2014 Super User Posted April 17, 2014 I will be doing a charity bike ride this coming September to raise money for multiple sclerosis. The short of the story is I had a friend who was diagnosed with the disease about 6 or so years ago so in an effort to help raise some money for the cause I am doing this ride. This will be my third time completing the event after taking a 3 year hiatus after my son was born. The ride goes from Richmond VA to Williamsburg on Saturday and then Williamsburg to Richmond on Sunday. The total mileage is right around 150 combined for the two days. When you register for the ride, they set up a donations page on your behalf so I am asking that if anyone has a few bucks they can sapre to help support a good cause that would be outstanding and much appreciated. My goal this year is to get to 5k. The link below will take you to my page. It is still pretty generic but i plan on updating it with some pictures once i get more into my riding and training for the event. http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/Bike/VARBikeEvents?px=4544103&pg=personal&fr_id=22247 Feel free to forward to anyone else you think might be willing to help support the cause. And if anyone doesn't want to give money but still wants to help out, they are always looking for volunteers for the event itself so you can help out that way too. If you have any questions about the ride or me or anything else, feel free to post up on this thread or PM me....and yes, I did run this by Glenn prior to posting Thanks guys & gals.... Jason 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 4, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 4, 2014 First training ride today- After getting my bike ready to ride after a year long hiatus which included replacing tubes, tires, cleaning and lubing the chain and cleaning the bike itself I was ready to go on a ride.I was planning on doing a ride i have done a lot that is a pretty easy ride of around 15 miles or so. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your perspective i missed my turn and added on around 2 extra miles. Ended up being a 17 mile ride that I finished in a shade over an hour so not to bad. I could have probably gone another 5-10 miles if i ate the GU pack in my jersey but I decided against it, especially considering the headwind i had for the last 8 miles. All in all it was a good ride and it felt good to get back on the bike. And if you want to donate, every little bit helps. http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/Bike/VARBikeEvents?px=4544103&pg=personal&fr_id=22247 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 4, 2014 Super User Posted May 4, 2014 What in the name of all that is Holy is a freaking GU pack? Is this some kinda amphetimine or something? Is it like snorting a rail road track of swoof? Will it make my brain go numb? Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 4, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 4, 2014 LOL i figured that would get you going bro.....just an energy gel pack that has a little caffeine and around 100 calories and is easily digested, AKA easy to take while riding. https://guenergy.com/products/products-energy-gels/ 1 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 5, 2014 Super User Posted May 5, 2014 That's pretty cool right there. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 5, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 5, 2014 That's pretty cool right there. Yeah it's good stuff for a little bit of energy to stop yourself from bonking. The big thing for me is that it doesn't take a lot of water to digest. Many of the power bars and other gels out there take up to a quart of water to digest so all the water you are drinking goes to the digestion process and not hydration, which when you are riding for a few hours becomes pretty important. And it tastes pretty good too, a lot like a cross between chocolate pudding and chocolate icing. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 8, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 8, 2014 Second training ride compelted on Tuesday. I knew i had to go out of town for a few days so rather than put it off and try and catch up later on, I went for a ride before i had to leave for the airport. It was actually the same ride as my first only I didn't miss my turn this go around. Ended up being 13 miles right at a 16mph average. Not to bad but i will need to improve for sure and should be in the 19-20MPH range pretty easily on a short ride like this one. 1 Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 I wish you well in your training and your event. How many miles, and how many weekly hours riding will you do in training? Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 I wish you nothing but the best of luck fly! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 8, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 8, 2014 Thanks for the well wishes everyone. As far as mles go I will increase each week or two but my goal is to ride every other day or so until I start adding in hours/miles. So right now I will be in the 100 mile range for the first few weeks. I build up a little different in that for about the first three weeks I won't go more than 25-30 miles a ride but I will try and decrease my time. Once I am in the 20mph range consistently I'll bump up the distance. By mid June I should be doing 250 miles or so a week. Once I hit late July/early august I'll start doing longer rides on back to back days. This is necessary since this is a two day event and riding 75-80 miles on back to back days is a little different than just one day. By august I should be doing 50-60 mile rides 3-5 days a week I plan on continuing to update this thread to help motivate me to keep on going and to bring awareness to the cause. I do this ride for a buddy who was diagnosed with MS when he was about 28 because he lost his vision for no reason. Luckily he only has a flare up once or twice a year but more money is needed for research. Normally I don't ask anyone for anything but I do in this case. I want to raise $5,000 so if anyone can spare a few dollars it would be great or if you can't there are rides all over the country that can always use volunteers too. Every little bit counts. Feel free to spread the word too and pass around the link above Thanks again guys. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 How's the training going fly? Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 13, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 13, 2014 Well i was out of town all last week and rode the stationary bike in the hotel...talk about boring. Then being out of town put me behind in school work so the past two nights i was up till 2am doing that but I should be able to sneak a ride in tomorrow. I am going to have to get my light up and going i think because riding in the daytime hours is going to be challenge with my schedule, the fiancé's schedule and watching our soon to be 4 year old. I guess i could get up really early and ride before work too but i never seem to do as well riding that early. I have also added in an additional goal....for my 38th birthday in october, since i should be in pretty good shape preparing for this ride in early september, i am going to try and ride the entire skyline drive. it is over 100 miles and hilly as crap but it would be a blast to do and be able to say i did it in one day instead of most who do it in two. thanks for checking in, I truly do appreciate it. Super User flyfisher Posted May 15, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 15, 2014 Getting a little cabin fever since i haven't been n the bike in a week now....i am off tomorrow so after taking care of some stuff in the morning i should be able to ride for an hour or so tomorrow... Up to $215 in donations now too!!! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 15, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 15, 2014 Got out today and while i knew it was going to be windy, I didn't think it would be a headwind no matter which way i turned. I was able to get in 16.55 miles in an hour and 9 minutes averaging 14.2 MPH. definitely slower than my other rides but it was a different route as i was adjusting it as i went to try and dodge the wind and it had a few more hilly sections. I am not sure if this will work but here is a link to my workout log http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/570991081 1 Quote

A new route and windy conditions are always trick or treat. I went out Tuesday for a 5K run and it was cool with a little wind. I thought I was in for a tough run, as it turns out, I ran my best 5K time in 20 years. You just never know I guess. Keep up the good work! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 15, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 15, 2014 I have ridden all these roads before so not a new route per se but definitely a new combination. A month from now the wind probably wouldn't have been a concern but right now, it definitely has an impact. It also doesn't help that i have not been eating much the past few days because i have been so busy and not wanting to take the time to eat. Sucking down a GU pack at mile marker 10 made a big difference. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted May 17, 2014 Super User Posted May 17, 2014 I used Gu all the time on bike rides. Just got back from weekend of riding at Tsali. Looks fun but road rides aren't for me! I stick to my singletracks Enjoy the ride! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 17, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 17, 2014 Is much prefer single track as I used to live in one of if not the best area for mountain biking but since I moved to richmond, road biking is much easier to do without having to drive 2 hours to get to the good stuff Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 18, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 18, 2014 Up to $280 in donations so far!!! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 21, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 21, 2014 Went on another ride today...still keeping the mileage low while i build up a decent base before i start adding on miles. Did my normal loop of right around 13 miles averaging a touch over 16 mph. Slowly but surely i will get there...who knew getting older and being off the bike would make it a little tougher to get the MPH up http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/576468493 I am also up to $455 in donations!!! I just might make my $5,000 goal... Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 22, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 22, 2014 Yes, I am going to keep posting my rides to keep this at the top until i reach my goal of $5000 raised or the ride happens Rode today went 19.46 miles averaging 16.4 MPH so not to bad. I was looking to add a few miles in to see how i would feel and surprisingly I felt pretty good and debated doing another 10 but I only had one water bottle with me and it was almost empty. Still a long ways to go till i can ride 75 miles on back to back days but given I have a bunch of time till the ride, I can pace myself and not try and do too much too quickly. http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/579185799 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 22, 2014 Super User Posted May 22, 2014 Keep up the hard work! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 27, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 27, 2014 Went on a ride today and it was the toughest yet, not because of the route or my fitness level but because all I could smell were burgers, chicken, sausage..... The riding part went pretty well as I did the same route as last time and upped the MPH slightly to 16.64 over almost 20 miles. I really want to add more miles but not sure I should...maybe I'll do one longer ride a week and two shorter rides. Still plenty of time to donate guys & gals Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 28, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 28, 2014 Got in another ride today. Almost 22 miles averaging 16.5 miles. I was gonna try and get to 25 but i made a turn a little to early but the route turned out to be pretty good anyways. http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/586195513 Quote
