Super User slonezp Posted February 27, 2011 Super User Posted February 27, 2011 When you apply scent, do you apply immediatly before use or do you soak your plastics? Are there any adverse affects to leaving plastics soaking in scent too long? Do they break down or melt? Lastly, do you believe your chances of getting the bite increase because of scent or is it that you are less likely to lose a bite because the bass holds onto it longer because it believes the bait to be real? John J. Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 For the most part I have several types of attractants, I use Kick'n Bass. Really I have Garlic, Anise Shad and Crawfish, and what I did was I took some small jars (jelly jars to be exact) and poured in some glitter to match my application (Red, Orange, and Green for crawfish, Blue, Silver and Black for Shad and Charteruse, Orange and Black for Bluegill). I dedicated 3 jars; One for bluegill imitation (composed of the glitter and a mix of Shad and Garlic scent), Shad Imitation (Glitter, and Anise Shad scent), and Crawfish Imitation (Glitter and Crawfish scent). Now all I need to do is dip my lures into the mix, drip dry and then put the lid back on the jar and cast the lure out. I found that this prevents getting some stuff on my hands, which it's really a good thing to get some on your hands that way you are not applying 'human' oils and scents to your lures. I use my crawfish scent mix for jigs, and texas rig plastics, Bluegill Imitation mix for my bluegill colored swimbaits, spinnerbaits, swim jigs, jerkbaits, crankbaits, etc. and Shad imitation mix for shad colored swimbaits, spinnerbaits, swim jigs, jerkbaits, crankbaits, etc. When I dip the lure in the mix, the glitter floats off in the water, kind of like scales. I got this tip from one of my magazines. I don't soak my lures, I found that jig skirts and plastics become stiff and don't have a lot of good action as they should. And I think that scents are just something to help mask human scent and also encourage the fish to hold onto the lure longer. Just my 2 cents Quote
Super User CWB Posted February 27, 2011 Super User Posted February 27, 2011 Megastrike is a paste I apply to just about everything. Only one "flavor" unless you were lucky enough to get a tube of the Crawfish scent. (I did. Sorry Speed) JJ's Magic is a dipping dye that I use on plastics. You can smell the garlic scent from 5 miles away. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 27, 2011 Global Moderator Posted February 27, 2011 I Love the garlic! All us Sicilian's do! ;D Quote
Super User grimlin Posted February 27, 2011 Super User Posted February 27, 2011 I prefer Crawfish. I kinda make my own. Quote

WanderLust Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 I was thinking Megastrike and JJ's this year... Interestly enough I decided to use more scent when reading Knowing Bass. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted February 27, 2011 Super User Posted February 27, 2011 I'm not really sold on the scent thing, but one thing I like about Megastrike is the lubrication it gives for sliding through grass and other cover. If the fish holds on a second or two longer, it's a bonus. You do have to be careful with it on tubes and jig skirts as it will clump the strands together if you apply too much. Quote
midnighthrasher Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Megastrike crawfish that was made for Yamamoto. I have 1 tube left. Quote
MNGeorge Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Primary scent is JJ's Magic...use it to dye baits as well. If it's a bait I'm just appying scent to, not dyeing, I dump the bag out and dip each individual bait before replacing it in the bag. If I'm dyeing, I do whatever needs to be done, let the baits dry completely and then put them back in the bag. When I'm out in the boat, I also use MegaStrike on baits that haven't been JJ'd because I don't carry JJ's in the boat. I also use MegaStrike on the 3X plastics because they don't get along with JJ's at all. Super User ww2farmer Posted February 28, 2011 Super User Posted February 28, 2011 Megastrike, small glob in between my thumb and finger, and rub it on the bait till it's coated. It stays on so I rarely reapply, baits usually don't last long enough to need reapplication anyways. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 All of the scents listed have produced for me in particular situations. But the poll only allows for one choice. Given one choice it would have to be garlic. Quote

BadKarma42 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Megastrike with my fingers. :-* Dip my worm in JJ's.  Quote
airborne_angler Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I started using Megastrike Last year and I like it. A little goes a LOONG way.I used it alot last year and still have plenty left in the first tube I opened. A little between the finger and thumb, and smear it all over the bait. Wipe the excess off on my pants. For me JJ's isnt too user friendly, gotta treat it like its nitroglycerin. Ive never seen a thread titled "OHH NO I Spilled Megastrike on the Floor of my Boat...How do I get the Stain out" Or "How do I get the Smell of Megastrike out of my Clothing" JJ's isnt friendly to warmth either. In a Dry,rented Storage unit environment, over a fall/winter period,I had 4 Brand New(unopened) bottles totally evaporate on me. Imagine my surprise when I wanted to use it in the spring. This stuff has got to be kept cool.Go ahead and try opening a bottle after its been sitting on the deck for 30 minutes in the sun. Better be wearing gloves and an old shirt, because this stuff will boil over on ya upon opening it.This stuff has a boiling effect/sizzle sound when you dunk your baits in it as well when its been out in the sun. Not saying JJ's isnt good, but to many precautionary measures need to be taken when using it. As far as I know Megastike is compatible with all plastics unlike JJ's which has adverse reactions to Berkley and Elaztech baits(They Melt). Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Megastrike isnt always user or should I say looser friendly/ had this total a$$hole at one of the shows last year giving us a hard time about him not needing scents or attractants because he was such a good fisherman. So anyway he picks up a tube to smell it. He tries to squeeze it a bit to get it out of the tube. The tube was soft and had an air pocket in it. The guy squeezes harder and it burps out a big juicy wad of Mega all over his mustache and beard. He wipes it off and smears it even worse. Jim and I hit the floor laughing. He ends up abruptly leaving wiping it off all the way down the isle. What a freakn riot..  Thats what you get for not believeing LOL Quote
bassin is addicting Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Megastrike with my fingers. Dip my worm/plastics (non powerbait) in JJ's.  Quote
Josh Bassman Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I like Pro-Cure Craw in the gel. I've also heard great things about JJ's. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I use mostly Mega strike for a plastic or lure already made. Or I have some lure craft that I mix in with my plastics. Stuff works good. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted March 1, 2011 Super User Posted March 1, 2011 I use only megastrike, whatever "scent" that is. Put a little dab on my forefinger , touch it to my thumb, then wipe it all over the bait, hook and weight. I wipe it off on my mustache, putting a little dab behind each ear. I wanna smell gooooood to the big girls. ;D Quote

I had a lot of luck on powerbait and garlic. I should probably find something to put on my senkos though. I'm gonna try JJs and megastrike this season. Quote
Lee Hillman Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I use a lot of JJ's Magic. I have also mixed a crawfish and garlic sent and caught lots of fish using it. try it some time.. Quote
