You alright fellas,

Being in england uk we only have pike, zander(walleye) and perch which ive started lure fishing for and the selection of good quality rods is very small with regards to st croix, g loomis, airrus, dobyns and other quality rods and ive just come across a St croix legend tournament casting dropshot/finesse 6'10" xfast action rod for a resonable price in the uk, so my questions are:

1) Could i use it for jigging for perch or would the rod tip not be right action for the application?

2) Would i lose sensitivity with regards to feeling the jig and detecting bites from predators when jigging with this rod?

3) Would a shimano curado200g6 be a good reel to pair it with for balance and weight?

What do you's think?

Tight lines and happy hunting fellas,

Cheers aye,

Hi Elwood, I'm UK based too.

Depends what you mean by jigging, but if you're casting jigheads with plastic baits in the weight range the rod's comfortable with it would be a superb rod. Lose sensitivity compared to what? Those rods are about as sensitive as you can get. 200 sized reel would probably be a bit on the large size ideally, but would work. A spinning rod would be a more usual choice though.

I'm thinking it'll work well for your application. I'd go ahead an buy it. That reel will balance it just fine too.

You alright Tim,

Hows you fella.

Sensitivity compared to what. Ive read on some forums that fishing jigheads with plastic baits on dropshot rods that you cant feel much with regards to feeling the bottom properly and feeling bites so what i mean is would that be the case with this rod considering its fairly top-ish spec rod? Ideally i want to purchase a jig/worm rod for jighead plastics for canal fishing and im very new to the whole lure fishing bit having already acquired a fenwick venture and an abu vertitas, however a good workman uses the best tools he can and even though in just learning the trade as so to speak this rod come up cheap so wondered whether it was worth the purchase but for using jigheads and plastics, do you know what i mean fella? Cheers for your reply anyway aye.

Are you american abroad?

I have the same rod; from the Legend Extreme series. Not that much difference between the two. I have several Legend Tournament rods, and they are very sensitive sticks. I use my 6'10" for walleye during the cold months, and it is great for the job.

For perch, I think it would be too much rod. St Croix medium power rods are roughly equivalent to most other manufacturers Med-heavy power rods. I have a tuned up Alphas on mine, and easily throw an 1/8oz jig. Trying to toss a 1/16oz jig for perch, with that rod and reel is going to be frustrating.

If you're getting a good price for that rod, go for it. Just don't expect it to be a great perch rod. Do as Tim suggested, and use a spinning rod for perch.

When a bass rod is rated for jigs, the jigs are usually 3/8 to 3/4 oz with line to match of 12 to 15 lbs.

The drop shot rod are usually rated for 1/8 to 1/4 oz with line 4 to 10 lb.

If you line is less than 10 lb and the jigs are less than 1/4 oz, the rod referenced should be OK regardless of the fish species you are targeting. If the jigs are less than 1/8 oz, a spinning rod/reel would be a better choice;

Shimano CI4 2500 for example.

Stuck here in the UK until those idiots at the lottery pick the right numbers Elwood! LOL

Is the 6'10" rod med or med light power? For what you want I would get a med light power. The forum you are looking at and getting that info from is probably one not worth reading! You won't go wrong with a St Croix med lite legend. You might also consider a dobyns champ extreme 702 in either casting or spinning. Look up lure anglers shop .co.UK, he's just started stocking them.

You alright fellas.

Didn't expected responses so quickly so cheers for that aye. Lottery? Lol Tim if they ever get mine right I'll pay it for you ok fella. Checked the site you mentioned but they must not have updated there site with the dobyns rods yet but nothing a phone call tomorrow won't clear up aye. I must say the Robyn's also get mentioned alot on the bass forums don't they. Do you fish in the uk Tim? If so where and what for fella? Wrb, .ghoti., WIguideand Tim the rod is priced at £100.00 sterling and used twice, lightly, but in immaculate condition and the postage was free, so considering on offer here to us Brits we only have premiers and avids on offer to us with regards to American rods which cost a lot more and than this rod is offered I thought it might be worth ago, know what I mean. I'm new to lure fishing and have bought a fenwick venture 7' ml fast action spinning rod and an Abu veritas 7'2" ml fast action spinning rod both rods the jig head and soft plastic models and 3 Abu revo spinning reels to get me started whilst I research and make my mind up for a top of the range jig head rod up to the value of around £500-£600.00 sterling and already searched all the forums for best soft plastics and acquired more than what I was initially wanting to spend on American bass lures although in smaller sizes for perch which I haven't used yet so which rod do you brand rod do you guys recommend in 7' ish medium light spinning rod and would fast or xtra fast action be better? I've had lots of follows from perch of all sizes and even pike but not caught nothing yet and I'm yet to try my arsenal of American lures so just so you know I not wasting your time I will post a picture of my purchased American bass rod and with any joy an East London canal caught perch so fellas which brand would you recommend? Cheers aye.

I will post the pictures ok fellas and I know you s get it all the time but like I said I'm unable to feel or look at the rods before purchase and only want one top end jig rod and hearing of g loomis nrx, st croix legend elite and extremes, airrus, dobyns, mega bass etc can you imagine the frustration of trying to buy blind? Anyways tight lines and may many personal best weights be broken to you s all aye.

West London. Fish the canals rivers and lakes all over the place. Shame you didn't post this a couple of weeks ago as there was a "Lure Fair" organised by the LAS, where you would have had a chance to look at and buy everything you needed, and plenty you didn't.  Sounds like the rod's a bargain, but it also sounds like you're trying to run before walking a bit. No point buying expensive rods until you get a feel for what you're doing and your preferred styles of fishing for the venues and fish you're after. Everyone's different.

Stay within the lure rating and you'll be fine. I frequently throw 1/2oz jerkbaits with it mostly. I have the spinning version and it holds up nice against 5 lb trout.

That rod is a Medium Light and Perch run bigger over there.

I have the 6'9" ML-XF LTB,, and that is a completely different rod than the 6'10" M-XF version. If I had thought he could aquire the older 6'9" version, I would told him to jump on it, no questions asked. That one is perfect for his intended application. The newer model 6'10" is considerably stouter. and a little slower taper.

I did wonder, when he said perch, if that would be the same perch we have here in the States.

The one he's looking at is a 6'10' ML-XF. The 6'10" M-XF is the shaky head rod, not the Drop Shot/Finesse.

The perch are the same species as far as I know just a lot bigger. I've heard they can get into the 3-4 lb range.

They're a slightly different species to yellow perch. The UK record is somewhere north of 6lb now.

This one was about 4lb. They look similar, but different.

Ah, my mistake. I'd reaallly like to get into a bunch 4 pound perch.

Cheers for you responses guy been great aye. Getting the the st croix ltb and phoned the friendly fisherman about dobyns rods however they don't have them so now as the bug is biting hard have looked into also getting a legend xtreme or a loomis nrx new but because the st croix legend xtreme is to be imported to the uk it works out pretty much the same price as the nrx is in the uk so which one should I or would you go for for a jig head rod say medium light to medium? Fast or xtra fast? Casting or spinning?

Posted

Nice perch Tim, where did you catch that beauty? What lure did it take? Looks like it could get even bigger around the shoulders aye or is it the way your holding it.

Encase some wasn't sure which rod, This is the rod I was originally posting about fellas, st croix TBC610MLXF Drop Shot/Finesse 6'10" ML X-Fast 1 6 - 10 1/8 - 1/2 3.8 1 $ 260, so could I use it for jig heads and soft plastic or not? What about the st croix legend extreme vs loomis nrx purchase?

Posted

I have both Legend Extreme and NRX rods....and for me, the NRX is in a different class, and should be for the price.

The GLX, however, compares pretty well to the LE, as least in my rod collection.

The LEs that I have rate at least 1/2 a power heaver vs the GLX/NRX lines.

Excellent tartan 34 so you reckon the loomis the. I've heard the st croix are under rated casting weight wise so are the g loomis pretty accurate then? In your opinion Fast or extra fast fella?
