Lew's?

Before I commit the cash. I figured I would get some input. More of a yes/no kind of thing. Lews is one of the few brands I have never fished before. I've always been interested in trying one. I just have a thing for round reels and didn't want to commit the money. Anyway. I figured a low profile added here and there ain't a bad thing. So today while shopping around town. I came across a Lew's Tournament Pro mounted on a 6ft 6in MH Temple Fork Outfitters rod. No idea what model. I just remember it was a TFO, I believe it was blue or green. Well the store is asking 129 for the combo I can probably talk them down to 100 cash out the door . I don't know squat about this reel or the rod. What can y'all tell me about them? Also, should I jump on this combo?

FWIW. I'm about 95% certain I will be buying it on Wednesday. I'm just interested in yalls input.

The reel alone retails for $200. If it's in good condition it's a steal at the price it's listed at. The TFO rods are supposed to be good too. I've never used one but I think Gary Loomis' name is attached to it. I think he designed them.

Yeah that is a one of the higher end Lews...I've used the standard Speed Spool, Tournament MG's and BB1s.  I've loved every single one of them and Lews has excellent customer service!  Wouldn't hesitate to buy that up.

It seemed mechanically sound. Reeled smooth as butter. Had some boat rash on it. Probably a 8 out of 10 cosmetically. Never really tried the TFO rods. I had an ultra light spinning rod from them I won in a tournament. Never really fished it though. I thought the reel was probably a good deal. With the exception of one shop up here. The pawn shops don't know jack about fishing rods and reels. I got my Calcutta DC from one of them for like 150 dollars a few years ago. Its all in the timing.

I venture out of the basement every now and then. Usually for excursions to the flea market or this forum. You are correct though it ain't very often I leave my mark up here though.

I have 3 Tournament Pro's, and they are sweet reels. You'll like it. Actually, you'll love it for only $100 and a free rod. Heck, I'd buy an 8/10 T.P. right now for a note without even thinking about it. Send that baby in to Mike at D.V.T. and you're good to go, buddy!

If you want an excellent combo for short money, pair that T.P. up with one of the new Tatula rods. I just married these two, and it's a helluva nice combo. I'll be using mine for jigs, Tx rigs, shakey heads in the 3/8-3/4oz range.

I have that reel on a a gloomis gl2 casting rod , love it it's my go to combo .. good luck

I was thinking about getting that one to pair up with a tournament pro for the same purpose (texas rigs), how does the taper do with hook setting?

Couldn't ask for much better. I haven't a lot of water time with her yet, but I'm sure I'll be happy with this one in the lineup. 

 

As for Raider's question about the TFO rods, I can't help there. Never used one. That's why I said free rod, because he can't lose on that deal, even if he spends a little bit for a good rod to put it on. For all I know, the rod could be as good of a deal as the reel.

If the rod is a mh the split grip and threading should be red to indicate mh. Silver indicates ml and gold, med. I find the TFO's are becoming my favorite rods. Not overly crisp and they don't have overly long rear grips.

Its split grip. I coulda swore it said MH on it. I could be wrong. I don't remember the thread color. I just remember the lower end was blue or green. Either way I want to give it a try. Thanks for the input homie.

The Lew's TP is quickly becoming the Glock 19 of the reel world...... well maybe not that good but they are sweet reels.
