Cast a lure, count the cranks on the way in, and multiply by your gears retrieval rate. For example, I was casting a 1/2oz spinner bait with a 3.8” trailer just this morning, and I cranked 72 times. My retrieval rate is 26” per turn. 72x26=1,872 inches, 1,872/12 ipf = 156ft, 156ft /3 fpy = 52 yards. I should note, this is a brand new rod and reel. 7’4” St. Croix BassX MH/MF with a Curado DC 6.2 on setting 2. I should be able to increase this by 5-10 yards easily with a little more practice, and the reel on setting 1 for max distance. Not entirely accurate. The IPT is not calculated the same by all companies. Some manipulate it by overfilling the spool and use the distance of the first crank as their IPT. Some are just ludicrous... Also, the IPT of the first cranks will be less than the last few cranks due to the spooled line adding onto the reel.... I find the best way is to make casts using a weight in a field. Because it is just a weight you are going to get the most optimal cast without and wind resistance from a lure. After the cast measure the amount of line out and add 20-30 yards depending on the spool. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 10, 2020 Super User Posted March 10, 2020 Another resurrected from the dead. Guess what. Five years later and I can't cast any further than before. 1 Quote

If you cast 'through' the counter, the friction is going to reduce the distance. If you want to use one, cast, then clip the line in before you start retrieving to get a distance. I just estimated my distance as such: Cast out Count how many handle turns it took to retrieve Multiply by IPT Gets it close enough. 1 Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted March 10, 2020 Super User Posted March 10, 2020 This goes to show how little I know about Shimano reels but can you take the side plate off and spread out the magnetic doojamafloppers? When I purchased my first Pro-qualifier reel, I was disgusted with my distances until I learned that I could do this. It helped my distances considerably. 1 Quote
