Back 2 Skool?

Seeing as 'm not gonna lie. The thought has been playing through my mind quite a bit. Personally I've always lived by the motto, "Watch out for me, cause I'm too ****ing cool for school!"

Well now it feels as if something may be missing. Almost as if I squandered my formative years in my late teens. Now to decide if I really want to pursue my secondary education.

After giving it much thought I'm about 90% positive this is the route I want to take. I feel that getting my BS and Doctorate in Philosophy is the way to go. I always quite enjoyed the courses I have taken in it and feel it could really make a difference in my life as well as that of families. Don't get me wrong, I intend to be an IBEW electrician until the day I die.

Oh and the thing I feel is missing in my life? The prefix Dr. in front of my name.

Any thoughts fellas?

That's a downfall to it. I ain't looked at the cost yet. However, thanks to the brotherhood, money isn't as big of an issue for me anymore. Time on the other hand could prove to be a issue. Maybe I can get a scholarship for it.

As to the college degrees, in your case it would look like this.

 

BS = Bull****

MS = More ****

PHD = Piled High and Deep

 

Which means they would be redundant.  You've been qualified for years.

And BTW, don't blame Siri for the spelling or lack there of, for "Skool", or any other word you happen to use on your papers, thesis etc....LOL

All i can say is go for it.  I am going after my Masters right now beause the time is never right and you just gotta do it.  I started my classes last August with a full-time job, a fiance and a soon to be 4 year old.  You kind of get into a groove of school, work, family time...rinse and repeat.  Now my quesiton is what would you do with a philiosophy degree?  Also, a philosophy doctorate is not the easiest one to get as not many schools offer the program and I have heard some horror stories when you go to defend your discertation too since everyting is hteory really and not grounded in fact or actual experience.The only real option would be to teach at the college level which would be a sweet gig if you can get it, especially once you get tenure which is getting harder and harder to come by.

 

Have you thought about an electrical engineering degree?  I know my buddy is one and he loves his job and he is working for the government right now....cake walk there and great benefits.  I always wanted to work with my dad in his business as an electrical contractor and he siad not a chance....if you want to do electrical then be an electrical engineer and make the big bucks and deal with the same things he does just in a different setting.

 

I'll tell you the same thing i told my younger brother who was going after (and subsequently dropped out) his philosophy degree....the only thing a philosophy degree is good for is allowing you to sit around and ponder why you don't have a job

 

In all seriousness though, go for it and don't look back.  Sure it is expensive but it's only money and money isn't what makes anyone happy but finding what you want to be when you grow up and going for it definitely has its perks.  Above all else good luck my man and i'll say it again...go for it!!!

As a full time, tenured professor; I can tell you it is a sweet gig.

 

And, regarding going back to school; better late then never. It only becomes harder as you become older, and more firmly entrenched in your lifestyle.

Which is why I like it. Its all theoretical. I'm good at that kind of stuff. As for the job. I intend to stay an electrician. I have no desire to walk carpet. This is just a back up. In case I cripple myself like my pipefitting buddy did. If that time comes I will look into being a professor, or successor to Copernicus.

The reading was a large part of why I enjoyed the classes so much too. You are correct it would be education for educations sake. I enjoy learning, I love reading, I enjoy writing. I figure if I'm gonna do it any way. I might as well have something to show for it. Reading is one of my favorite past times. Doesn't matter if its medical research journals, Engineering magazines, gossip rags, various forums, or even financial publications. I enjoy reading them and trying to learn the most I can from them. I branch out into many different things in my thirst for knowledge. Just cause I hated the boring repetitive core classes at school in no way means I'm stupid. The first two years were like a repeat of high school. I was bored with them and decided against participating in them.

I've written Master level papers for people and gotten A's on them. In my entire college career and two years after it ended. I never made below a 96 on any research paper I wrote for myself or others.

My posts on here do not reflect my writing skills. Having a computer that will grammar check and spell check is a huge benefit. I just use a phone for ease of use.
