Jd_Phillips_Fishin Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 My favorite brand of reel in my arsenal is Lews, i've had nothing wrong happen to them so far. But on Sat. I noticed that the material on the handle was starting to peel off. We pulled in to a marina to eat lunch for an hour and it was laying in the sun, do you think that caused it? I'm planning on buying a bunch more and i dont wanna have this happen again. Are there any ways I can prevent this from happening again without having to spend any money on reel grips or nothin like that? Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted April 14, 2014 Super User Posted April 14, 2014 i've heard of this one some lew's reels in other threads. i only have one speed spool, fairly new so no damage yet. although they are pretty soft/tacky feeling and do feel like they could peel or crack Quote
Jd_Phillips_Fishin Posted April 14, 2014 Author Posted April 14, 2014 its not reely bad its just a little bit on the edge of the handle Quote
0119 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 what part of the handle? The rubber grips? I've had nothing but trouble with shimano' s rubber grips. Or do you mean the paint on the crank? Is it metal or carbon that's delaminating? Quote

You can either email info@lews.com to let them know what happened and they will send you replacements, their customer service is great. Or you can buy reel grips, which is what I prefer to do because I like to use them anyway and they stop the peeling. Hope this helps Quote
blongfishing Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I've had no problems with lews. Also, was it Clemson Marina? Quote
mprestonSEK Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Have you used any kind of sunscreen while you were out fishing? Last summer I noticed that when I was fishing that my grips on my TP were starting to shed little bits of rubber. I am pretty positive that is what caused it because it didn't happen to me until then. Quote
Jd_Phillips_Fishin Posted April 15, 2014 Author Posted April 15, 2014 i wear a buff and long sleeve Magelan fishing shirt and sweat pants when i fish so its not sun screen. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted April 15, 2014 Super User Posted April 15, 2014 It's a semi common problem. Out of 10 Lews reels I had it happen to one and it was shortly after buying it. Call or email and they'll send you 2 new knobs free of charge. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted April 15, 2014 Super User Posted April 15, 2014 With Shimano grips, sunscreens and GULP products can eat the material. I don't know about Lew's, but it's a possibility that you had some form of chemical from a bait, or otherwise, that's tearing it up. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted April 18, 2014 Super User Posted April 18, 2014 Well I got combined maybe 4hrs use with BB1 Pro and my knobs are peeling--Boo to Lews Quote
Super User tomustang Posted April 18, 2014 Super User Posted April 18, 2014 Switch to the abu garcia foam knobs Quote

Or do you mean the paint on the crank? Is it metal or carbon that's delaminating? This is not unusual with Shimano reels, do an internet search ad you will find dozens of posts. Shimano will say it's insect repellent or sunscreen, the fact is that many people that have this problem don't use either. I've replaced grips on 2 stradics, make sure you remove the bearings from the old grips, they are not supplied when just buy the grip. Quote
KritterGitter Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 They had a bad run of knobs with the coating peeling off, shoot em a call and like a few others said they will have new knobs out in a few days. Lews did state that they redesigned the coating process and it was just a fluke. Any new reels you should be fine. Quote
Jd_Phillips_Fishin Posted April 23, 2014 Author Posted April 23, 2014 Well I got combined maybe 4hrs use with BB1 Pro and my knobs are peeling--Boo to Lews thats exactly whats happening to mine. Almost identicle. Quote
kingkong85 Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 It's a known problem. What caused this? I forgot what they said but they sent me new knobs free of charge. Quote
