EdsBar Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Maybe I'm just being dumb..... So I lined my Phlueger reel with Tatsu and filled the bale. My first cast was a nightmare. When I flipped, it was like the line expanded and spooled out without warning. Is there just too much line on my reel? Is this normal? Thanks for the help... Quote

Super User Tywithay Posted April 14, 2014 Super User Posted April 14, 2014 What lb is the line? Anything over 8lb is too stiff for a spinning reel. If it's less than 8lb, you either spooled it backward or overfilled it. Quote
FrankW Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Hi EdsBar, The flair like you described is usually caused by too much line. It can also be a problem if you use too heavy of a Fluro/Mono on a spinning reel. So you need to reduce the amount of line on your spool and/or reduce the line weight to one with less memory. Super User WRB Posted April 14, 2014 Super User Posted April 14, 2014 Before you cut off any expensive line try this: Spray KVD line or TangleFree conditioner on the spooled line. Wet a towel and run your through the rod guides, then in-between the folded wet towel laid flat on the ground and slowly pull off about 1/2 the spool line (75 yards). This step works best with 2 people but you can do this on a lawn. With the line between the wet towel and line laying on the lawn, rewind the line back onto your reel. The towel will add just enough drsg to keep the line snug. When the line is just below the spool edge radius, about 1/16 to 3/32" below full, the spool is as full as it should be. Retreat the spooled line with line conditioner and you are good to go fishing. Tom Quote
primetime Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I would agree, sounds to be overfilled, and fluoro is usually stiff out of the box so conditioner or just getting it wet for first time and letting your reel bring it back in tightly usually helps. I find if I spool my reel using a machine, the line goes on super tight and if I don't wet it or spray it first it will always unravel since I always overfill and save fluoro for leader that I have to cut off....... I find that more than half of the people I spool with fluoro mainline and we have about 8 choices of the most popular brands end up coming back to complain, want it off, and end up hating it..Actually, more than 50%..I now tell everyone I won't spool it unless they have used it before and can explain to me why they are using it...I usually find out that they just picked up a magazine and have no idea why they are paying .14 per yard as opposed to Nylon Mono for .2 a yard....heck, braid is cheaper. 1 Quote

"I read on the Interweb that its the best" is not limited to fishing, it happens in all sports (and other things as well) We see it with a bunch of cycling accessories. But cluele$$ newbie$ i$ where it'$ at, so,.... I have what I call the baseball rule. I tell you what the deal is twice, after the third time, I'll agree with whatever nonsense you've read, and ring you up. 1 Quote
EdsBar Posted April 15, 2014 Author Posted April 15, 2014 I'm gonna rewind it through a damp towel and check that out. I'll save the excess for another day. Quote

I'll admit to drinking quite a bit of it, however Fluorocarbon line is one batch of Kool-Aid that I just can't swallow. A-Jay 1 Quote

A-Jay The only time I ever go near flouro is when we are fishing crazy clear water for some snappers, and tuna, even then its the exception, and only as a leader. Buddy built a daisy chain with 50 lb flouro, and I had to leader this thing in with it. I was conflicted between being really careful and not loosing it, and snapping it as a lesson... Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Flouro is a different animal if you are not use to fishing it. I like to keep the spool filled up to about 1/16-1/8" to the top of the spool. I've never used any of those sprays but it might be worth a shot. I definitely would not strip that line off. Quote
Preytorien Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I use 4lb flouro on my crappie/ultralight rig, and it's pretty manageable with KVD L&L, but I just recently tried it on my baitcaster. Two trips out and I'm back to braid, but I added a 4ft flouro leader. I'll see how I like that. The reason it's exploding off of your spool is because the memory of the line remembers the diameter of the packaging spool (3inches or so), so when you put it on a smaller spool, its like a spring and pops off since it's returning to it's memorized diameter. Gene posted a video about spooling a spinning reel a few weeks back. He mentioned taking a filled spool and soaking it in hot water. It causes the line to shape to the diameter of the spool, not the spool it was packaged on. I tried it with my ultralight I just respooled with Abrazx and it worked like a dream. I applied KVD L&L and I haven't had a single tangle or pop off and I noticed the line itself had much less pronounced coils on a slack line and casts like a rocket, even with a little 1/16 crappie jig on it. You might try both of those tricks. Just a quick couple of thoughts though..... 1. Don't use boiling water, I don't know the facts, but I could see it changing the consistency and makeup of the line, effectively ruining it 2. Don't tape the tag end to the spool while you're soaking it. You'll get the tape glue on the line. Use the little line keeper on the spool of your reel 3. When you soak the spool, make sure you take as many non-spool pieces off as you can - this includes the drags, washers, clips, etc. Essentially you want JUST the line and spool itself Good luck, and if all else fails, use PowerPro Super 8 Slick - casts far better than any flour I've used Quote
