Went out last night for a couple hours. Threw a jig around at the local reservoir. Caught 9 bass largest was a little over 4lbs. In this reservoir there are no pike or walleye or any other toothy fish. But there are snapping turtles. I was fishing a weed line and saw some bubbles close to where I was then after a few casts had a hard hit and set the hook. There was a lot of weight on but my line broke almost instantly. I figured I hadnt checked my line and it had a problem and broke al I retied and started again. After a few more casts the same thing happened. A lot of weight of the hook set and the the line was broke. Could it have been a snapper? I had accidentally snagged one by the neck here a few years ago but I figured that was an accident.

By wide waters do you mean canal? The canal gets really tough by late june because of the temps

Yes, off of the canal. Reallllllly slow this time of the year. Do you have any other recommendations for us bank fishermen during the dog days of summer?  Thx!

Which reservoir is that? Boat or bank? :-)

Newark Res?  That's the only thing close to Port Gibson I can think of.  If so, snappers.  Also the bubbles are a dead giveaway.

Boat fishing is tough at those wide waters, some days in the heat.  I'd be covering ground and water with a horizontal bait like a spinnerbait.

Many thx ! I am a bank angler and found the Widewaters in Spencerport to be great in May/June. But towards the end of June and now into July, fishing is slower than the turtles I see in the pond. Can't buy a bite and yet I see them jumping the surface to get at the bugs. It is what it is.

Spencerport wide waters (basically a dredge dumping area) is excellent mid summer, IF YOU CAN GET OFF SHORE.  I occasionally get out there with my kayak.  Smallies are plentiful if you work the rock piles with lipless baits.  you can find walleye in the deeper, main channel of the canal. Prespawn, and spawn, you can walk Lyell with a rod and reel, and a bag of senkos, and clean house on both green and brown bass.

These are from Spencerport:

Yeah, those are beautiful. I limit myself to banking along Lyell St. and for now the bite is off. But, it is a beautiful and relaxing place. Never caught a Walleye there. Maybe I will see you out there one day. Will stop and say hello if able. Question. Have you ever  fished the ponds at the High Acre Nature Area in Fairport (the ones tied to the Waste Management Co.)? They look promising but have never heard much about them.

I never climbed under the chain link fence before it was a public park, lol.  There's fish in there.  It's really shallow.  They dug out new sections less than a decade ago, so maybe it's had time.  Ponds are like aces up your sleeve.  Good to have a few when you go out on a shore hop.

Excellent, thx. I went there (Quarry Pond) about a week ago to throw frogs for a few hours. Nothing. But did see some huge splashes from what was obviously big fish. Another fella stopped by and said the ponds are good for bass and pike. Time will tell.

It's called boughton park. You need a pass to be able to fish there unfortunately. Amazing fishing though. I never really did much bank fishing so I can't be much help there unfortunately

I've seen the Newark Res on a map, but have never been there. I currently live in newark. Is that place worth checking out?

I been there once.  Don't recall much.  It was one stop on a shore fishing marathon with some buddies.

It's been a couple years, but is this even enforced or posted anywhere?

I have gone a few times without my pass in the window and came back to a paper in my window twice saying I need a pass or I'd be towed. So I don't know. I'm guessing if you go a bunch without a pass they would do something but I'm not sure.

I may have to try to get the canoe in that newark reservoir

Any recommendations in conesus this coming weekend.  Ive been going over some contours and have been eyeing docks with deeper drops,  the points in the center look good,  and north western corner looks good to me.  Any recommendations what to use or where?

I fished my club tournament solo on Honeyoe this past Sunday. I got 2nd place by myself in a team tournament. It was slow out deep, but I managed a bag of cookie cutter 2.5 lbers for 12lbs which was good enough to get paid.

I spent two hours flipping weeds and bailed on it when I only had two 12" fish to show for it .... headed to the bank and had steady action all day on slightly bigger than average Honeyoe fish, I just didn't get the kicker.

Yes get on points and deep weed edges and patches, flip in them. Deep docks are good tooo and the occasional shallow dock holds a good one.

I also fished a team tournament there (Honeoye) on 18th.  just about everybody was out deep (42 boats).  we tried that for about 45 minutes with 2 tiny ones to show for it.. we went dirt shallow and fished frogs around and under docks and boated a bunch of 2 pounders and lost a big one for 11-5 and a top 10 finish. 13-13 won and i am 90% sure he was shallow.

When someone can unlock where the monsters go after the spawn, they could clean up in summer tournaments.

In this part of the country it's all about ledges.

Seem so obvious, huh?  Every spring, people stick big fish, but come summer, it's huge numbers of 12" fish.  You can look at tournament records online and this bears out.  It's not a singular struggle.  I won't even bother fishing there if I don't have to.  Not when Conesus is next door, and typically a monster factory.  What ledge would you pick?

I like what appears to be isolated structure at 30' in the middle of the lake.

I particularly like the right side closer to more structure near the shore.

Sorry the post was mostly rhetorical.  This lake is only a couple miles long - you can fish most of it in a long day.  Bigger fish are in there.  No one.  No one.  No one catches them in summer.  I don't mean to sound negative, or dismiss your suggestions, but the truth is, this place sucks after June.  It just is.  I've tried that deep hole, thinking I knew better than most that told me the same as I'm saying now.  Go a half hour west, and fish Conesus if you want to catch  big fish.  Bags approaching 20 and over are not unusual in summer.  The crazy thing is it gets more pressure than Honeoye.

I live 1.5 miles from the northend and fish Conesus a lot but have a kayak tournament on Honeoye in a few weeks. That’s why I was asking
