Hurricane Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Weeds, points, and docks. Docks all over the lake. Weeds on both sides from the lake from the launch north, and any point on the lake is good, esp. if there are weeds on it. There are a few good weedbeds south of the launch, but it took me 10 years of combing the bad ones to find the good ones, so I am not about to blab that on here. Same goes for the north end, there are some dead zones, but more good stuff up there, and it seems even the "dead" spots from the launch north still hold fish, just not fish that will do you any good in a tournament. As for bait/lure selection. Keep it simple, wacky senkos, t-rigged creature baits, and finesse worms on a drop shot. You'll catch bass, maybe even a couple good ones. If you can't, they are either really really off that day, or your not around them. Thank you for responding. . SOLID advice.. you have much luck on spinnerbaits and top waters at all? Quote

rmcguirk Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 A spinnerbait is not a large part of my Conesus arsenal. Top water depends on the day. I generally avoid spinnerbaits on Conesus too, unless I'm having a bad day and just want to maximize my chance of just getting on some fish--meaning pike. Instead of spinnerbaits, I like using swim jigs. You'll still get too many pike, but I have much better luck with them than spinners. Quote

PAGreg Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Hit waneta/lamoka yesterday. Its a two hour ride for me and I was getting mighty nervous the closer I got, noting how high and muddy the creeks were. But, the lake was maybe an inch or two high and slightly stained. Only saw small chunks of debris on lamoka. Did pretty well pitching docks on Waneta and then topwater in the pads on Lamoka. Largest fish was a 4 lber that exploded out of the pads with the sort of strike that makes you want to fish. Every fish I caught had a fat belly. They are eating well. Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Fished seneca lake for tournament on sunday, placed 3rd with 13.1. Rained all day, found some largemouth still on beds on Friday and marked them in the canal. came back to muddy water on sunday and a 2-3 degree temp reduction. 2 of my 4.5s were still on beds, and the rest were really shallow cover. 62 degree water temps. couldn't find anything on seneca as most of the guys who fished seneca got skunked. So I retreated to the canals and was able to together a pattern. 1 Quote

I take the kids out and we hammer blue gill all weekend I go out during the week for bass and pike with the fly rod and I haven't caught one in almost two weeks. Quote
nosdog2 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Looking for some Silver Lake advice.  Headed up to the cabin for the long weekend and was looking for advice (PM if you want) on a few tips/spots to go after some panfish for my sons to catch.  I am not looking for secret spots or anything, just want them to have a productive time and catch and release some fish.  If you want to give me a secret spot I have been in the military intelligence business for 22+ years so I can keep a secret!  Thanks guys and have a great 4th weekend! Heading out for the last time early tomorrow morning..been frustrating.I was there today... It was brutally tough,as tough as I have ever seen it. It took me 9 hours to put 5 keepers in the boat. You definitely didn't pick the best time to see what conesus can be like.I flipped miles of usually productive grass, with big baits, small baits, inside edge, outside edge, holes, pockets, the thickest stuff, scattered stuff, and had ZERO bites. All 5 of the fish I caught were under docks, at least 100 docks apart, lol, and nothing bigger than 2 lbs. I graphed tons of spots outside the grass, and around points and saw nothing on the screen that made me want to stop and fish those areas. The only fish I marked were suspended 10-12 feet down over 16-18 fow. That's not my game. It definitely was a struggle. It is for sure the absolute worst day I have ever had there. Quote

Hope tomorrow is better. I am going to see what a jerk bait can do.. Maybe the Rapala Shadow Rap can get something for me.. Hell, even a monster pike or muskie would be cool.. Quote

If you want to give me a secret spot I have been in the military intelligence business for 22+ years so I can keep a secret! Thanks guys and have a great 4th weekend! For panfish, drift just outside the deep weed edge in 13'-14' feet, there are no secret spots for this, just start at the south end and head up the east side, you'll run into them sooner rather than later. If you make it all the way to the north end, go across the edge on the flat up there, and then head south, down the west side. Tie up a small drop shot rig with a #8 hook, and the weight about 12"-14" below the hook. Nose hook a tiny ice fishing plastic bait, or something like a 1" gulp minnow. Drop the rig straight over the side of the boat, if you don't get bit in 10 seconds, reel it up, move the boat 5 feet down the weed edge and drop it again. If you can't catch 100 bluegills or perch in a day this time of year on Silver doing this, put the boat on Craig's list and take up golf. 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted July 6, 2015 Super User Posted July 6, 2015 Conesus sucked yesterday as well. Quote
rmcguirk Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Conesus sucked yesterday as well. Yes, yes it did. Sucked all weekend. Friday, got bass skunked. Thought I was going to get entirely skunked but a late pike came to the boat. Traffic on the lake was unbearable and it chased me off by 2:30 or so. Saturday was much better, with a number of 2lbers and a 4lb kicker. Had to shut down by 11:00, though, as I was hosting company. Sunday, again, was tough. Only three bass came to the boat, and none over 2lbs. Traffic on the lake all weekend was a zoo.  Separately, I didn't grow up with a boat and this is only my fourth year owning one, so I'm always concerned I'm violating some "unwritten rule" about sharing the lake. Here's my issue from yesterday: I pulled in to work a weedline. Wind was coming out of the south, so I was drifting north with the wind. I had my drift sock out and was using my TM to keep me where I wanted to be relative to the weedline. When I first pulled in, another boat was working south towards me. They were at least 100 yards away when I pulled in. For 20 minutes or so, we moved towards each other and then they turned around and started working north again. About 10 minutes after I pulled in, another fisherman pulled in behind me, less than 30 yards, and was working north as well. He was moving faster than I was and soon was within no less than 15 feet of me, where he stayed for a bit before driving off.   The questions: Was I in the wrong for working north towards the other boat? In such situations, how much space should I allow? And, when we get close to each other, is there a right of way or something like that? Was the guy who pulled in behind me and came quite close to me in the wrong? And, if he was, how should he have handled that?  Thanks for thoughts.  Rick Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 6, 2015 Super User Posted July 6, 2015 I give the other boat twice the distance of a long cast, whether I think they're wrong or not. Quote

bradc36 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Niagara River: Have hit it 3 times in the past 7 days. All of the good fish that were being caught in <10 FOW have basically moved out to deeper water.  Lake Erie: Business as usual, lots of bites in the 4-5 lb range in the usual spots. It never gets old, still trying to find my first 6lber this year though. Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted July 10, 2015 Super User Posted July 10, 2015 Lets see.....since last report which was after my last tournament on Sunday 6/28.  Monday 6/29: Silver, was OK, , a bunch of cookie cutters all caught junk fishing.  Tuesday 6/30: Silver, On fire., best five were a 4-12 smallmouth, 4-10 smallmouth, 4-4 lmb, 3-7 lmb, 3-3 smallmouth. Again, junk fishing.  Thursday 7/1: Conesus....slow, very slow. I talked about it in a previous post.  I skipped the holiday weekend.  Tuesday 7/7: Silver....decent evening. Again with the cookie cutters and again junk fishing.  Weds. 7/8: Silver...On fire...best five were a 4-9, 4-3, 4-1, 3-11, 3-11. Gave me hope for the Thursday night tournament.  Thursday 7/9: Silver............ Held my 2nd Thursday night tournament of the year, and did well. Ended up in 2nd with 10.86lbs for our best 3, winners had a hair over 11lbs with tournament lunker of 4.89lbs. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 13, 2015 Super User Posted July 13, 2015 Since last report: Â Screwed around all day on Silver all day friday thanks to the 1.5"+ of rain we got Thursday. This was "try a bunch of new crap" day, and I caught fish on everything I used, just about every where I went. Numbers were not a problem, size.....meh.....I could have done better if I wasn't goofing off............I think LOL. Bunch over three lbs, but no hogs. Â Today I held my annual "aluminum boat only" tournament on Conesus, and I fared much better than my last recreational outing there a week and a half ago. Numbers were no problem, and we culled up all day long, bringing in a 15.5 lb bag, which most days on Conesus is "thanks for coming" weight, but most guys struggled, and we were only one of 4 teams with a limit. Our 15.5lbs was good enough for cashing at 2nd place, winners had 19.91 lbs, and lunker. I know the winners well, and know they grounded it out in the weeds all day for just a few bites with one key fish for them off a dock, but I found a rare (for me on that lake) productive shallow cranking, and swim jig bite that I beat to death all day hoping for a few big bites that never came. I find it hard to stop shallow cranking when it's working as I love to do it...........Oh well.........at least I had my best day ever fishing for Tiger Muskies. LOL Quote
