ColdSVT Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Smacked em pretty good on Waneta yesterday with my buddy pagreg. Battled the "5-10mph" winds that were predicted all day. Got bass on top, around structure, and tight on the bank. Only a few in the low three lb range though, lots of 1.5-2.5s. Quote
Subaqua Adinterim Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Went to one of the fingerlakes near Rochester yesterday. I try to go there at least once a week. Have been having some luck in prior weeks on Senkos Caught just two yesterday, LMB that we're small. Also caught a good size pickerel. I fish out of a kayak and whenever I cross the lake, I troll a small crank bait. Yesterday morning, I put on this thing that I got when I was a kid about 40 years ago, looks like a full size bass shrunk down to the size of your thumb with a plastic lip and two hooks on it. Never caught anything on it, but it looked good and yesterday as I looked at the stuff in my plastic box, I figured I'd give that lure a shot. About halfway across the lake, my pole bent over (I keep my rod holders in front of me when I troll so I can watch the pole when trolling). Grabbed the pole and I knew I had something big on. Got towed around for about ten minutes and I was finally able to get it up and next to the kayak. It was a huge lake trout, close to two feet long. Tried to net it but it was too big for the net, since my net is only about 16 inches across and about the same depth. The trout was barely hooked on one of the small treble hooks, so when I tried to net it, the hooks got caught in the rubber mesh and the fish got off. It took a few seconds for it to figure out it was free and then it just swam down toward the bottom. It was a pretty neat experience that can be chalked up to dumb luck. There were a few boats around that we're trolling lead lines, and they watched me fight the fish and try to land it and were just as amazed as I was. Since I release everything I catch, I was glad that it got off after it got up near the kayak so I could see it. This is not the first time that I've had luck trolling in my kayak, just the first time with a laker. Quote
Uber Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 How is the bite up on silver lake right now? Thinking about heading there this weekend.. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 How is the bite up on silver lake right now? Thinking about heading there this weekend..Tuff..... I fish this lake almost every day, and it's in a funk right now. I won a tournament there this past weekend with only 14lbs, and second place was only 8lbs. Usually this time of year it takes almost 20lbs to win, and 16+ to cash. A lot of good fisherman are leaving with there tail between there legs. I have never seen it this tuff this time of the year before. I don't know what is going on. The fish are here, but they are not biting where people are fishing... Which is under docks, in the weeds and on offshore structure. We had a very harsh winter, and slow start to the spring. It seems like all the fish pulled up to spawn at once, and pulled out to deep water at once and have yet to come back to fishable water. Several factors are contributing to this. #1 The water is still crystal clear from 10 feet or so to the bank, and weed cover was slow to form this year, and in some places its nonexistent. #2, we had the most massive perch hatch I, or anyone who has ever fished that lake has ever seen.. There are literally billions of them in schools so thick, side to side, end to end in the 20-30 foot range that once the bass pulled back after the spawn they found these perch and have not had a reason yet to leave them. Fishing for well fed bass, suspended under schools of bait that are constantly moving is not my, or evidently anyone else's strong suit on this lake. Quote
Uber Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Thanks for the tip. I may hold off on silver lake until the fishing picks up again, maybe towards the beginning of fall? I haven't really fished silver lake, was going to head out there with my dad for the first time. We have been pulling in smallies in the river and here and there in Lake Erie. I think it's just a tough year all around with the cold winter and not so warm start to the summer. Quote

Super User Jar11591 Posted July 27, 2014 Super User Posted July 27, 2014 Anyone having any luck in upstate NY? This month has been beyond tough. Numbers and size plummeted this month. I'm fishing deep, I'm fishing shallow. I'm fishing early, I'm fishing late. Had a good April, and a great May/June. But then July came and reared its ugly head. Wasn't anywhere near this bad last year. Quote

bclark7b Posted July 27, 2014 Author Posted July 27, 2014 Caught this one the other day. Just shy of my pb which is 6.2. this one was 5.12 1 Quote
blankminded Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 I have to agree with you guys. Im out in the Oswego area and I went out a little yesterday and today with no luck. It seems like once July hit the bass bite went dead. Quote
EvanT123 Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I'll agree with what some of the other guys said. I've been doing pretty good catching the smallmouth shallow. On the river we are almost in a period of transition where the smallmouth are patrolling weed beds and weeds lines feeding on fingerlings. Just tonight I saw a smallmouth chasing them into a foot of water. Then proceded to catch 2 on a gunfish in about 2ft. My first time using that lure and it is sweet. Quote
glitch Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Landed these 2 at a small lake near Albany Saturday evening... my largest bass (and second largest) yet  No idea on weight/length.. no scale or measuring tape  Also was the first time I've ever run into a DEC guy...  Larger of the two.. even though I think the pic makes it look smaller than the second one       Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted August 1, 2014 Super User Posted August 1, 2014 Tourny in Conesus saturday...cant wait! Ive never even seen the lake much less fished it lol Put your big boy pants on, it will take 20lbs+ to win, and I seen 20lb bags not even cash there this time of year. I assume that your with CV, don't be too upset if some of the Conesus locals send you guys home scratching your head. It's not Honeyoe, there's not going to be a flurry of 12" fish to keep you busy. ColdSVT Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Caught a lot of fish, had a limit early. Water was up some but still very clear. Flipped a ton of docks and put of good numbers just no fat girls. Some good ones but no real good one. Worked the weed edges in deeper water with some sucess but once again no fat girls. Had a good time and only had one toothy critter come play...a nice northern and i got to keep my bait lol The fish were very spooky...if ya even knicked the dock forget it 16.11 won it... Quote
Chief 2 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Did ok yesterday also. Out for about 2 hrs. and picked up 3 smallies, 3 LM, a perch and a rock bass. Picked up the bass on top water, which was unusual for the lake I fish. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 I went to Waneta-Lamoka for the first time ever for me. It's not as filled with grass/weeds as I like, but I still found plenty of grass to fish, and I liked it a lot, it was a numbers game today, no hogs, with my biggest from each lake being about 2.5 lbs. I caught 11 out of Lamoka, and 8 out of Waneta, not bad for never seeing the place before. I wish it was closer. 68.5 miles one way is not terrible, but it's not any every week trip either. I'll be back. Quote
