Smallmouth Hunter Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Specifically in casting distance, how do these reels compare? Is the RCS 1016 t3 (stock) spool that much better than the t3b's? Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 I don't think you'll see a big gain in overall distance, unless you're using under 3/8oz. The 1016 is a fantastic spool though. People put the rcs1016 in their Steez to improve casting, if that tells you anything. 1 Quote
mjseverson24 Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 the T3 is definitely a better casting reel for lighter baits, but like tywithay said you wont see much of a difference in baits over like the 3/8 oz... That being said if you upgrade your T3-B with hawgtech or bocas it will cast lighter lures much better than stock... Mitch Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 I've found that throwing baits like a lipless crank or spinnerbait, the distance of each is pretty on par with each other. for pitching though (which I use 3 t31016s now) the 1016 spool is noticeably easier to pitch greater distances with less effort with baits from a 1/2oz jig and trailer down to a 3/16oz weight + baby bomb. (that's highest and lowest weights i've tried so far on my t3s). the t3 also shines if you are casting lighter baits. It's very noticeable the ease it does this and especially into the wind. as long as you don't have side to side play in the spool, you won't backlash into winds. As far as smooth retrieves, out of the box the 1016 wins. Once I deep cleaned my T3B (I had to remove all the shields and added a worm gear and drive shaft bearing. they were very cheap RC car bearings, too. the bearings were PACKED with junk) it was and still is just as smooth as my T3s. Smallmouth Hunter Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 Thanks for the info everyone. I got a t3b and plan on putting in worm gear bearings and a drive shaft bearing then sending it off to e_bassfisher to let him do his thing. Will be used for mostly 1/2 oz lipless cranks. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 Get a new handle, too. That t3b one is awful Quote
DirtyDeuceGoose Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 My T3B turned into a mean machine when I swapped the handle. Also I've been considering dropping in the 1016 spool as well. I think it's gonna be worth it Quote

I think it's gonna be worth it If I were you, I'd spend an extra $30-$40 and get the SV spool over the RCS1016. The 1016 is a sweet spool, but the SV is incredible. Quote

Super User webertime Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 Whats the best place to buy reel parts? Really just want spare spools for 2 reels... Lexa 100 and t3 Lexa (or Aird if you want a shallower spool) you're probably best to go through Daiwa. If you want a standard t3b spool, which isn't a bad spool at all, Daiwa as well. 1016 spool, you can get at the tackle trap. Other shops with good prices on spools (SV, 1012, etc.) Are plat tackle, hedgehog studio, and Rakuten. Quote

Which driveshaft bearing and why? Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 14, 2014 Super User Posted April 14, 2014 Which driveshaft bearing and why? the only drive shaft bearing it has... makes retrieve smoother. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 14, 2014 Super User Posted April 14, 2014 as long as you don't have side to side play in the spool, you won't backlash into winds. I am a better caster than you. I can backlash throwing into a strong wind. Actually they weren't backlashes, just a few overruns where I had to pull out the loose loops. The T3s were the first reels I took out this year to get back into the swing of casting (because they were new-2-me). Second time out I was casting on Long Cast and Zero brakes. I need more practice because I wasn't seeing enough gain in distance to use Long Cast considering how it felt like I was going to get into trouble at the beginning of the casts. Quote

He will make that reel as good as it can possibly be........and then some. Why not just let him do the bearing upgrades as he has to tear the reel down anyways? Quote
