bucketmouthbeatdown Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 spooling my first ever baitcaster BPS Pro Qualifier 4.7:1 and I spooled it with 10lb Power Pro braid. I have more than an 1/8th of an inch (more like a 1/4 inch from the lip) with all 150 yards of braid. Will that be ok? or should I un-spool and add some mono backing then re-spool so its closer to the lip of spool? Quote

Will that be ok? or should I un-spool and add some mono backing then re-spool so its closer to the lip of spool? Â I always start out with mono backing, keeps the braid from slipping. Â As well, I've used 10lb braid with bait casters, it is on the thin side and could dig in a bit. But it is do-able. I caught my PB on a BC spooled with 10lb braid, although it was a different brand, and more like 4 lb diameter as opposed to PP's 2 lb diameter. Â I now use 20lb on my BCs, FWIW. Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 You really do not want 10# PP on a baitcaster, it will dig in on itself and cause you some real headaches! Its a fantastic line for spinning reels though.  I prefer 30# for baitcasters, its more than sensitive enough for anything you want to do and casts a mile.  Take your rod to a park or a big backyard. Put a stick in the ground and tie the end of your line to it. Walk off the entire spool. Now put 50 yards of 10-12# cheap mono on your spool. Now tie on your braid to the mono using a uni-uni knot. And spool up 75 yards of braid and cut it. Look at the reel, is it to the level you want? If not, tie it and walk it off again and put more mono backing on. Keep doing this until the reel is where you like it. Once you do it once you should be able to visually see how much backing you will need for future reels. You should never need more than 75 yards of braid, its plenty for any casting you plan to do and will leave room for a years worth of breakoffs and reties.   I good way to get exactly 75 yards is to tie it off to the stick and walk it all off. Then grab the other end and tie it to the same stick. Now grab the line and walk until its tight. If you cut it there, it will be exactly half of your spool (75yds). Quote

Yes, additionally 10lb braid is very thin and a challenge to cast and use, especially since this is your first casting reel.  You may want to learn to cast this reel with a line that's easier to cast and cheaper like 12 - 15 lb mono.  Once you get the hang of it you can go back to braid, but 30lb braid will be much friendly and will still get the job done.  A-Jay Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted April 12, 2014 Super User Posted April 12, 2014 Used 10lb pp for about a week, took it off and put 20lb on it. Â Works much better. Â 10lb is great for spinning reels. Â I choose to put just about a 100yrd on my reels, and use 20lb mono for backing with either an albright or uni knot. Â You may want to leave a little more gap like you have though if you are going to use mono/flouro topshots. Â I use anywhere from a 10 to 20ft topshot. Â But 10lb braid will be a challenge if this is your first baitcaster and may lead to bad experiences not to mention if you throw a bit of a heavier lure and it does it might part and cause you to loose some equipment. Smallmouth Hunter Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 10lb braid has the diameter of 4 lb mono. It will dig in a lot and be a pain. I would take all the line off and put some 30lb braid on there. Quote
John G Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I just put 20# on a baitcaster and I have had zero problems with it. The reason I believe is because the line was put on very tight. I will be trying 15# or maybe 10# next. 1 Quote
Alpha Male Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I have 15, 20, 30, 40, and 50lb braid on baitcasters and havent had a problem...yet. when i do you can all say i told you so. but for me the thin diameter is the main advantage of braid. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 12, 2014 Super User Posted April 12, 2014 As long as it is tight you will be ok of a while. Â Once you start fishing though there is a good chance it will loosen up over time and dig in like was mentioned. Â I find the 8lb diameter to be the sweet spot for me on my PQ in the same ratio as yours. 1 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 12, 2014 Super User Posted April 12, 2014 I agree with what has been said. You might be much better off going with 20# - 30# PP instead of the 10# you have now. At the very least, spool it off and put a mono backing on first. For best BC performance, you really need to have the line spooled to about 1/16" from the edge of the spool. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 Learning to cast revolving spool tackle is sometimes trying.  Back lashes are part of the process.  Even after we learn, there are some over spins how and then, but then we call them professional over runs.  But like I said, in the beginning, there is usually a few more.  This is what they look like.  If you don't / can't pick it out, the mono is a less costly lesson  A-Jay    1 Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 Hey A-Jay, I never saw you around taking pictures that day!    Those definitely fall into the "professional" category. I've backlashed more than I'd like to admit, but I don't think I've ever seen more than 2 that looked that bad. I figure you did them on purpose so you could take a couple pictures of what is possible. Clickster Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 I am a huge fan of Fireline. I used to use Spiderwire Ultra Cast Invisibraid until 3 years ago..I tried Fireline and never looked back. I never run any mono backing and it works fine for me. Quote

Super User F14A-B Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 Yea even worse... It's really under spooled to! Have BPS put it on for ya.. Or another shop They will help you out. Quote

I have never found anything 'invisible' about it. Â Sorry to hear about your experience with Fireline. I have not had a line break on 8 or 12 pound test in the last 3 seasons. Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 I tried fireline once, and ripped it off after one day. Terrible line. primetime Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 I find that the best braids for casting reels and especially new ones I have not yet dialed in and are not familiar with how they handle is to use either a softer braid like an 8 strand like Power Pro Plus, Samurai, or any softer line that will not dig in to my reels.  I used to try to use lines under 8lb diameter and always ran into problems with the line digging into the spool, overruns etc, and once I started using an 8lb braid min, or preferably #50-#65 which is 10-12 for the most part. I have been throwing 10-20 lb mono and copolys for years and never have issues, and I am now only using braid on spinning reels, 2 flipping set ups and a frogging rod, and I have #50 PP Plus, #40 Suffix Braid y6 which is 10 dia I believe, and #65 Plus which has been awesome for last few months. I still like to use 10-15lb mono on a few set ups, and hybrid #15 or #20 for flipping.....  I always use a Simple Mono like Trilene xl or Xt or whatever is on sale on a new reel which is an all purpose MH set up to get used to casting it and Mono is still a good choice for flipping...Big Game has never let me down either, nor has any mono on sale including cabelas and Stren.  FLuoro is smooth and nice to throw but based on the tendancy to get overconfident real quick with a new baitcaster, I like to go Mono and always suggest the same to guys buying a new setup in 12-15lb for all purpose....  Just my experiences, but I know guys use 832 in #20-30 with success, I just do not have any long term success and have blown too much money on braid on new reels and 10lb 2 diameter would never cross my mind except for spinning gear. I also hate coated lines on casting reels but love crystal on my spinning gear. Lots of the braids are good and I like Stren, Hi-Seas, Fins, and any other reputable company like bass pro line etc. Quote
