gmoberly15 Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I need a new baitcasting rod and reel for the upcoming season for around $100. I need one with a 7:1:1 gear ratio. I was thing about getting the Abu Garicia Orra, BPS Pro Qualifier, of the Pflueger Supreme. Tell me what you guys think so I can have a better idea on what to get. Quote
Tony L. Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 At that price, I really like the pro qualifier. It think that outperforms just about everything in the sub $100 categpry. If you are willing to bump your budget into the 120's, you have a bunch of other stellar options. Thruthfully though, the pro qualifier still does a reasonably good job at holding its own against those reels too. The thing just fights outside of its weight class. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 12, 2014 Super User Posted April 12, 2014 Of those, I'd pick the PQ.... 1 Quote

Arv Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Pq. Are you only spending 100 total? Or 100 on each? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 Pq. Are you only spending 100 total? Or 100 on each? OP wrote "rod and reel.........for around $100." I would assume that to be for both, but you know what they say about ass-u-me. However, from the reels he listed, it looks like he is willing to spend about $100 on each unless he knows where he can get killer deals on those reels. OP, welcome to the forum. Lots of good information to be found. Hope you take the time to read some articles on your favorite techniques. I can't help with suggestions on any of those reels. I've never owned any of those three. As you can see, the PQ is a favorite recommendation on this site. I have no idea how the Supreme went from a $180 reel in '08 to a $100 reel today. I can tell you I have an older Pflueger Trion. It ain't the lightest. It ain't the prettiest. What it is is a very good casting reel. Retrieve feels very smooth to me. The Supreme should be a step up from the Trion. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 Pq on a *** black would make a nice setup for around $200. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 tatula for 103 ish, and an abu veritas, or st. croix triumph... otherwise the quantum kinetic pt can be found on line for 60 ish, good reel if you are comfortable with casting reels... Mitch Quote

Arv Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 I am spending 100 on each.Roger that. That was my guess. The pq at 100 is a great deal. You can shop around and find the tatula and lews tournament for around 100 as well if that's something you're interested in doing. Great reviews out there on the *** but I've never picked one up before. The veritas is a nice rod, I just didn't like the trigger on it. My favorite that I've handled has been the shimano compre. Also, something to consider. At bass pro, there is a pq/carbonlite combo for around 160. The carbonlite is another great rod in that range and in the combo you'll need getting a great deal on both the rod and the reel Quote
