Kevin22 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 So, I want to hear your opinions. Which do you prefer? Not talking about the stand-up kind, or fancy head designs. Just round or football. Quote
Fishing_Cory Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Better bottom contact with a football style shakey head, feel much more and a better action in my experiences. Quote
Hogsticker Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I like football shaped heads as they don't seem to get hung as easily in rock, though it still isn't hard to do. Quote
livetofish28 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I like round because they're really the only ones I have I like them have gotten used to fishing with them so it just works for Me Tight lines Andrew Quote
jdw174 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I carry both, but I'm partial to the football heads. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 11, 2014 Super User Posted April 11, 2014 Neither....I like the hybrid of the two that VMC makes called the Rugby Head. Stands up great like a football, has an offset EWG hook to rig baits weedless...I hate the giant barbs, pegs, or screw locks on other shaky heads, and they come through wood/dock's AND grass better for me than both a round or regular football. 1 Quote
frogflogger Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 2 different tools for me each has its time and place - rock/gravel football - laydowns and such - round. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I voted round. My favorite feature is a flat bottom on the head. I cant really tell any difference in the two when I fish them. Especially in the real light weights. Quote
McAlpine Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Football head. However; Mike (see one post above) and I were just chatting about this yesterday and I'm going to try out some of those football heads he has with the side cut off here pretty soon. The hook he has on his shakey heads just looks killer. BTW guys, I had a relatively unimportant question I emailed to Mike yesterday and he was Johnny on the spot and got back with me ASAP. Can't buy that kind of customer support. Thanks Mike! 1 Quote
bassguytom Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I use round style shakey heads. The Picasso shakedown is my go to with a powerteam finicky tickler on it. Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 11, 2014 Super User Posted April 11, 2014 I carry both, football tend to hang up less in areas with chunk rock. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted April 11, 2014 Super User Posted April 11, 2014 Football but I found that with the 1/8oz I fish most of the time it doesn't really matter. Allen Quote
Lip 'em! Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 We need a neither option because I use the Spot Remover shakey heads which are rounded but completely flat on the bottom. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 I use both but if I had to pick one it would be round. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 If forced to pick between the two you have listed I'd opt for round. Now having said that, I fish the Owner Ultrahead which doesn't really fall into either category. I haven't looked at any other shakeyheads since discovering the Owner's, they're that good IMHO. My favorite before the Ultrahead was the earlier mentioned Shakedown. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 Give these a try and see what all the talk is about. Bobby has a large following on this forum. You can order direct and be sure to add a few of his other baits. I am especially fond of the MegaBug and MegaTube Craw. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 13, 2014 Super User Posted April 13, 2014 I like a round head and I don't care too much for a flat bottom. I make my own but before I did I tried a bunch of different ones from Jewel to Buckeye lures and then I bought the Cumberland Pro Lures round shaky head, nothing fancy and it worked as well as everything else so then I had enough info to make my own. I like a round head as I said but it has to be a flat eye hook, that has worked the best for me and like some others have mentioned, I use small weights, I rarely go over 3/16oz with 1/8oz being the most common weight and so it doesn't matter if it is round or football at that weight. Knightiac Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Echoing what others are saying... Both have their own time and place. I find myself wanting to use football more but use whichever is needed. Quote
