Alpha Male Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I have bought a 7'3" Pinnacle Perfecta MH rod and a Lews Tournament reel for jigs and C-rigs, and im going to use my spinning setup for spinnerbaits. So Now I'm looking at line, Im thinking 20lb InvisX. My lake is generally shallow weedbeds and ledges. My second thought is 40lb braid with 20lb leader. my question is, is there a sensitivity difference when using a leader? Im definitely concerned about strength as the weeds are THICK. but i really want sensitivity. Quote

I actually think a braid to whatever leader gives you the advantage of better sensitivity using certain leaders. I've not tried mono for bottom contact, but I do find if I use a mono leader I have better sensitivity than going straight mono. As for florocarbon, I really haven't noticed any difference. Quote
Hogsticker Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 So are you asking about line for your casting or spinning reel? Either way I would not recommend Invizx if sensitivity is your primary concern. It has more stretch than any line I've used. It does handle very well on a spinning reel, but not 20 lb test Quote

Kevin22 Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 50# power pro for the thick weeds. If you think you can get by with 40# then go for that, it will help with sensitivity when dragging c-rigs. The only time I would choose straight fluoro over a braid/fluoro leader is if the water is stupid clear, like 20'+ visibility. Otherwise straight braid or braid/fluoro leader is the ticket if the word "weeds" is included in the question. 1 Quote
CJV Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I would skip the Fluro and forget about leaders unless your fishing ultra clear. I would say anywhere from 50-60lb Sunline fx2 would do the trick. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 9, 2014 Super User Posted April 9, 2014 Mainline #50 Kanzen, #20 AbrazX for leader. 1 Quote
Arv Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I use braid to a leader 95% of the time and I catch fish. Quote
5dollarsplash Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 My second thought is 40lb braid with 20lb leader This was my first thought, and what I'd recommend. It'll leave you free to contemplate the great mystery of life "To leader, or not to leader?" 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 9, 2014 Super User Posted April 9, 2014 Don't know anything about this rod, called a MH with heavy stats! You don't need 20 lb FC or 50 lb braid for MN bass that may weigh up to 8 lbs. You need heavier line so you can get lures through cover like weeds. If that is your goal go with straight braid, leader in weeds isn't needed unless you need to break off the line for some reason. FC or mono will not cut through weeds, braid does! Tom 1 Quote
mjseverson24 Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I am sure I fish lakes very similar to the one you are referring to, I use straight floro, especially with a heavier power rod for jigs and c-rigs, the main advantage is slack line sensitivity, but the other is the little bit of stretch helps keep fish pegged more so with the c-rig than the jig, with the jig the stretch from floro is good for rod and reel protection... also floro has superior abrasion resistance over braid so the pike/muskie will have a harder time breaking you off... My suggestion for floro would be abrasx, or Berkley 100%. 17-20 lb should be more than enough... another good option is like a yozuri hybrid... Braid works just fine, it is just not my preference...
