T_Nix35 Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 What do you guys like to use to degrease your bearings when breaking your reels completely down for a good cleaning? Quote
papajoe222 Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 If I'm looking for a quick clean, I also use lighter fluid. If I'm taking my time, I prefer to use SimpleGreen letting the bearings soak overnight and agitating the container occasionally. Either way, I'll give them a good rinsing and let them air dry before oiling. Quote
Tartan34 Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Perfect Solution for me. It was recommended to me on here, and I've been very impressed. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 8, 2014 Super User Posted April 8, 2014 Perfect Solution. I soak them in a glass jar with a lid at full strength. Rinse THOROUGHLY with hot water. I use a blow dryer to expedite drying. Quote
T_Nix35 Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 Yeah Mike from DVT recommended Perfect Solution to me, but I want to get this done. I have been waiting for about 2 weeks now on some stuff to actually get to it, so now I don't want to wait longer to order some Perfect Solution. I asked him if Purple Power would work and he said yes it just may have to soak longer. I just went out and bought some so I am sitting down and getting to it right now. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted April 8, 2014 Super User Posted April 8, 2014 If you are in a hurry then buy a can of brake cleaner from the parts store. It'll break down anything in there and it also dries with no residue in just a few minutes. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 8, 2014 Super User Posted April 8, 2014 I get PS at Lowe's. That's the only store I've been able to find it. Quote
Elegantly Wasted Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 100% Acetone brake cleaner through a bearing blaster - fast and thorough. Quote
Maico1 Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Perfect Solution and you can get it off the shelf at Lowe's. One thing I like to do after the bearing has been soaking is take one of those Dust Remover cans and while using the insert spray the bearing until you get spinning then drop back into the cleaner while it is spinning and continue to let it soak. I will also do this during the rinsing process a well as you will hear them sing. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted April 8, 2014 Super User Posted April 8, 2014 I tried Krud Kutter (home depot) for the first time over the weekend. Worked really well and seems to be very similar makeup to Perfect Solution. I just got a 4oz bottle for around $2. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 8, 2014 Super User Posted April 8, 2014 4 oz. for $2? That's pricey. PS is $5 for 32 oz. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted April 8, 2014 Super User Posted April 8, 2014 4oz is plenty for what I need. And gas is more expensive than PS so the convenience of having HD less than 2 minutes away works for me. Regardless of price it works great. I was simply listing another good product for the purpose. Super User J Francho Posted April 8, 2014 Super User Posted April 8, 2014 For two bucks, I'll try it. I need a lot more than that, though. I get around ten reels per bottle if PS. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted April 8, 2014 Super User Posted April 8, 2014 John... upon reading your recommendation earlier this winter I stopped in a Lowe's to pick up a bottle of Perfect Solution. Finally found it half hidden behind some other cleaner... the bottle covered with a 1/8" layer of dust. I'm guessing PS isn't Lowe's best selling cleaner. I'll give it a try when next time I'm deep cleaning my reels. oe Quote
