I mainly fish with baitcasting setups. Even light techniques like weightless senkos, shaky head, etc. I just am more accurate casting a baitcaster and feel like I get better feel bites. I am worried that I may be missing bites or not allowing specific techniques to be used the way they should be.  I am thinking about getting a nice spinning reel setup and transitioning some techniques to it.

My question is for those of you who mainly use baitcasters and use spinning setups for only a few techniques. I realize some of you use spinning for everything or majority of everything, and that is great, but I really would like to hear from primarily baitcast lovers.

What techniques do you only trust a spinning setup on? What rod/reel setup do you use? And what type/brand/size line do you use for your specific technique?

I appreciate any advice!!!

The only things I only used spinning for were drop shotting and dock skipping. Wacky rigs I would throw on either or. The rare times I throw a shakey head, I'll throw lighter ones on spinning.

Even with that, I'm eyeing picking up a finesse baitcaster setup for heavier drop shots. Need the spinning for dock skipping though, every time I get a little confidence in skipping a baitcaster I blow up a spool of line.

I use spinning outfits for drop shotting and shakey heads. It's more of a casting distance thing for me, with light weight and line on a baitcaster I can't cast worth a crap

I don't trust only one technique to a spinning setup, to me a spinning setup is nearly all around. I have several rods: GraphiteLeader Bosco, GraphiteLeader Veloce, GLoomis SJR782 and SJR783, Shimano Clarus and several reels: Shimano Sedona, Sahara, Stradic, TwinPower, Daiwa Revros, A dvantage, Tierra, Abu García Cardinal 62. As for the line I have some spooled with nylon, others with FC, braided or copoly. BTW, I got more BC gear than spinning gear.

Light finesse jigs and light jerk baits. That be it. On a side note I wish all baitcasters made a clicking sound when line is being peeled like the Excense DC.

I use a MH spinning setup w/ 15# braid for all soft plastics. Better distance and no backlash when a Senko goes flying off in the wrong direction.

A medium -fast spinning setup is prob the best all around spinning setup.. A MH is Alittle much for spinning

Why ?

I would guess because MH spinning rods are well into the lure weight ratings that can be handled by baitcasters.

hmmmmm ........ Under that line of thought then there would not be rods nor baitcasters capable of handling the weight ratings that spinning gear can handle something that is completely incorrect.

Shakyheads, dropshot, split shot rig, and swimming grubs all have to be fished on spinning gear for me.

Shakyhead-6' 10" M/F LTB/3000 C14 10lb Sunline Super fluoro

DS/SS/or grub-6' 10" ML/XF LTB/1000 Stradic 10lb Nanofil/8lb Sunline Super fluoro leader

or a 7' 3" Ethos/1000 Symetre 6lb Mustad Ultra line mono.

I use spinning gear for many different techniques so I'll just list the few I use the most. First and foremost is the shakeyhead, I really like this technique because I get lots of bites (and quality ones as well). This is usually what I turn to on tough days. I use a 3/16oz Owner Ultrahead rigged with a NetBait T-Mac. I get better distance with much fewer hassles using spinning gear with this technique.

Finesse jigs are another lure I feel is best suited to spinning tackle. In addition to Wacky rigs, Slider heads, split shots, Flick shakes, etc.

My most used spinning set up is a 683 Powell Max rod with a Symetre FJ 3000 spooled with 20# braid with a 15# fluoro leader. I don't think Powell makes this rod anymore so I'm hoping nothing happens to mine, well they don't make it in the Max line anymore possibly in others though. I always use a fluoro leader, 15# is my most common size but I also sometimes use 10# and 20#. I to used to think I got better feel from casting gear but after using spinning long enough to get good with it they both feel the same sensitivity wise now. Same thing goes for casting accuracy, just takes time and practice.

I usually take 5 rods on my boat, 4 casting and 1 spinning. Covers 99% of my needs.

The question was for people that primarily use baitcasters and only use spinning gear when they have to. This generally means only using spinning gear for lures that are too light for baitcasting. In that case, a MH spinning rod is usually heavier power than needed. I can think of a couple situations where such a rod might be useful, but not useful enough for me to own one.

Obviously this doesn't apply to every one, especially those that use spinning for more/all of their presentations.

The nice thing is that the availability of those rods gives us a choice.

I prefer spinning tackle for light tackle and live bait. For an "all-around" rig

my suggestion is Medium Power/ Fast Action and a 2500 series reel. Specifically,

I fish a St. Croix LES70MF/ Stella 2500 FE/ Tatsu #6; G. Loomis PR844S/ Stella

2500 FD/ Yo-Zuri Hybrid #4 and a St. Croix Avid AVS66MLF/ Stella 1000 FA/ Hybrid

#4.
