sodaksker Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I was watching the Bass Pros last night on DVR. I guess I was a little frustrated about the fact that these "pros" are out there touting their sponsored bait brands and the "good" quality of the brands, and then in the next breath, they say "Now make sure and put some quality hooks on your baits or trade out the hooks with quality hooks" They need to quit telling us to change out our hooks and tell their sponsors to put quality hooks on the baits to begin with. Rant over......That just struck a nerve with me last night. Quote
Blue Streak Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I agree but I don't think the bait companies really listen to the pros. The smart guys design the baits and the famous guys put there names on them because they are paid to do it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 22, 2011 Super User Posted February 22, 2011 Soda, you hit the nail on the head. What the pros do not tell us is all their secrets. Like the pros who changes out all crankbait hooks. Like the pros who modify their baits and keep it secret. Like the pros who tout their brand of baits but do not use them in tournaments but say they did. I change out crankbaits and lipless crankbait hooks based on what the pros have told me in private so I can't tell anyone as it would be a breach of trust. But just because Ike or Duckett say they are using "X" in a tournament does not mean they are catching them on "X" as they could be throwing "X" in the tournament but nailing them on "Y" baits. Just follow the money!!! ;D ;D ;D Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 The pros need to be honest and the consumer needs to be smart to recognize a "sales," job! Quote
Shad_Master Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 This reminds me of the guys in the boats wrapped in every color in the rainbow telling us to dress in drab colors when fishing for spawning bass : Quote
FISHUNTER Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I'm in the fishing buisness. The old saying runs true...need to catch the fisherman before the fish. Its a market just like anything else. Does it all work...probally not, maybe 98%. Could you do just as good with 1% of it. YES! But we are all not tournament fisherman and we all enjoy catching fish on new lures and having the thrill of having tricked a bass with something new. There's a post every week of so about whats your favorite lure of all time. That thread is the tell-tale of all. See how many brand spankin lures show up in that thread ;D Its all good Quote
WanderLust Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Or the same reason the Spook doesn't come with split rings... Its the 1st thing that most people change so why not sell it that way. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 23, 2011 Super User Posted February 23, 2011 The average consumer doesn't care one bit about the hooks and will not pay the extra required for a premium hook. It's all about dollars and cents. Price point is king. Quote
IntroC Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 The average consumer doesn't care one bit about the hooks and will not pay the extra required for a premium hook. It's all about dollars and cents. Price point is king. This pretty much sums it up. Most would rather pay $5 for a good bait with crappy hooks than pay $8 for a good bait with good hooks Quote

Price point is king. DING! A lot of pros, though, will tell you what they do their baits, how they get them to where they want them. I think most are very forthcoming with information when it comes down to it. If you're ever in the situation, ask one to see their treble box, most will tell you straight up they change every hook on every crank; even on quality baits with quality hooks. I believe that it was printed at some point that KVD changed every hook on every bait. I can remember hearing it from guys like Shaw Grigsby, Hank Parker, Paul Elias, Clunn...the list goes on. Quote
Carrington Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 why cant you just buy more expensive baits lol, they come with better hooks. Quote
tritz18 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 It all about money these days, cheaper to put lower quality hooks on brands so they do it. Apparently it doesn't stop most people from buying these lures if they are still selling. For me I tend to buy more expensive lures, in the long run they seem to be well worth the extra few dollars. Price point is king. That's very true. The other side of the coin is manufactures look to demographics. Lucky Craft knows they will not appeal to those who shirk at a ten plus dollar lure and produce a product with the intent of targeting a segment of anglers. That angler is also savvy enough to know what they want and why and are less impulsive. Strike King targets another demographic and hopes what price point won't attract, PR, commercialism and marketing will. I wish for once, a major event like the classic was won on a bait that has been out of production for 20 years. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 23, 2011 Super User Posted February 23, 2011 Well, the pros don't need any advice from me, but the rest of us don't need to be changing hooks on every new lure. It really depends on the brand and specifically, on the hooks they use. 8-) Quote

I agree--would be interesting to see it won on a out of production bait--probably won't be though--all the pro's have so many sponsers that we would never know about it if it did happen : Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted February 23, 2011 Super User Posted February 23, 2011 Wasn't KVD's jerkbait he won in Pittsburg with an out of production bait? steve Quote

central.PA.bass Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 SO... I guess I will lead this discussion to this question... What baits that are on the market now would you automatically want better ones and what brands would you leave the stock hooks on? Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted February 23, 2011 Super User Posted February 23, 2011 I'll throw this out there... Would you pay an extra $1.00 for a bait if it had premium hooks already on it ? I'm talking Owners or at the least, Gammies. Or would you rather save the dollar and change them out yourself ? Quote

Made me think on that one. The new baits are not the same as the old ones just like wiggle warts. The Rogue KVD used was like 20 years old. Allen Quote
Georgia Jeff Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I fish braided line on my crankbait rod so even a slightly dull hook rips right into their lips (and occasionally through them). Works for me! Quote
