Today, I bossed around my fellow co-workers. These are the people that, theoretically, on same corporate level as me. Upper management got a wind of it and said nothing to me. I got tired of their sloppiness, laziness, cockiness, etc., so I finally snapped and called them out on it. The owners of the company looked at me, and walked away while my peers just stood there in shock.

So, this is what it feels like to be a boss? Maybe one day I be a great boss as I feel nothing inside. The very fact I care about a company as a whole, and yet the bottom-line does not affect me in any way, must mean for something. I guess I care about whipping things into shape and achieving greatness without care for money, but rather the satisfaction of success and state of mind of a job well done that gives you a high feeling.. I don't care if my co-workers hate me or love me again, long as I know I made a difference.. Huh.. weird.. Guess I had to vent a little even though I never talk about work outside of, well, work.

I was also recently sent to deal with a client, I guess you could say I was a diplomat at a business level, and man it felt great to be that trusted and respected. As i think back, society as a whole and human beings are strange breeds that are misunderstood. It's amazing, don't you think? If you get my drift, that is. :)

Company Man huh?

Better be easy with that. Just cause upper management held their tongues today. Doesn't mean it won't come back and bite you later on. Not telling you what to do or not to do. I'm just saying be careful what you say and do. Ive seen people fired for a lot less.

Least you got the sorry slobs to respect their job a little more

I wouldn't have said anything without a legit reason.

Legit reason or not that's a good way to get sent to the house. Seen it happen several times don't be surprised if you get called into the office Monday. You aren't the boss it's not your job to handle it.

I actually started off in the corporate world working for Diners Club.  Without being an eye witness I could not comment on whether RootBeer's action was right or wrong.  If he felt justified so be it.  What the reaction will be in the future from fellow employees or upper management remains to be seen.  One thing I've learned in the business world in the last 40 some odd years, to make a move in any company getting noticed helps quite a bit.  However sometimes that move may be out the door.

Just my opinion, but the hi-lited part of your post is what will move you into a higher position at the cube farm.

Unfortunately, arguments between co-workers can be quite common.  The first time you do it may lead to shock from the crowd, but the more it happens, they'll learn to ignore you.  In a well managed company, you would most likely never see a boss dress down an employee.  This is because it isn't anyone else's business, and it is best done behind closed doors for that reason.  A good boss will praise in public and reprimand in private.

I"m with Raider on this: Performance and professionalism does it for me, but then again, we're in construction which is a different animal than the corporate world.

X2.

To the OP

Commitment, dedication & passion are certainly desirable traits on the job.

Confidence gained by knowledge, training and experience along with self discipline will serve you well.

Your experience as described, indicates there may be too much of some and not enough of the other.

I have worked with a lot of managers in my 27+ years with the company.  From reading what you have said, it sounds like mgmt didn't like what was going on either, but they didn't have the backbone to say anything about it.  I have seen many managers that want the title and perks, but don't want to be confrontational with their employees.  It also sounds like they gave you a reward by sending out to a client.  I know of quite a few bosses that were on top one minute, and laid off the next.  What happens today doesn't mean anything if you lose favor tomorrow.

Its been so long since I've worked idk what the corporate climate is anymore. However, I was one who always spoke my mind, didn't care about consequences, never lost a job because of it either. I did have a boss tell me once that he didn't understand why the corporate office put up with my bs. I reminded him that I was running three offices, had happy customers and the he was a jerk, oh and had the highest profit margin in the company. Being the best lets you get by with allot. I quit that job, next one I was hired as a project manager trainee, normally took 2 yrs to become a Sr project manager, I did it in six months. No butt kissing involved, I could get the union employees to work on my projects because I treated them well. I would go out in the field and work along side them, at the end of the day I would buy beer and pizza for the crew. I protected the guys from the corporate buttholes, never took credit for their work as a result they worked harder for me. The president if the company had a love/hate relationship with me, she hated the way I treated her but loved that my projects were on time under budget and made her money. Stuff like that lets u get by with allot of political incorrectness ;)

See! You get/got it. If you treat us with respect, don't act like you're better than us, and don't take the credit for what we do. We certainly will bust our ass for you. Word travels about good PMs. You may not think it does. I assure you it will spread all over the country. It the same with good and bad tradesmen. Word gets around. I have brothers that can tell you about dang near any brother electrician in this country. Work ethic And personality wise.

It sounds like you were a dang good PM to work under.

It was because I worked my way up, never forgot all those lessons learned in the field. Another Sr PM, worked his way up too, got the big head and my crews refused to even step foot on his jobs. I literally had to go on the factory floor and ask a crew to stop fabricating some of my stuff and work on his. We fabricated everything in house, shipped to job site where everything was reassembled and installed. Strange thing my jobs never required any repairs, but allot of his stuff was "damaged during shipping". He never learned

I was not a fly on the wall to witness what you described however, generally speaking, calling everyone out is not the mark of a good leader-no matter how passionate you are about your work.  What it will do is cause your co-workers to secretly despise you.
