Slefler Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 What conditions water/weather do y'all alternate on silver or gold blades and why? I'm gonna load up on some new ones but the blade color, well the blades in general (shape), have me stuck on what I need to get. The water I'll be fishing them in is stained, you can see about 3-5ft down. Any help is appreciated. Quote

Slefler Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 Thank you gents! Is there a specific time when you throw a specific colored skirt? For example: what is your thought process on throwing a chartreuse/white over a full on chartreuse or full white? Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 I got really heavy into spinnerbaits in the late 80s early 90s, I fished all kinds with every blade combination imaginable and I got so specific with sizes and configurations that I had to start making my own by 1998 as there was nothing on the shelf that matched what I needed. That said, in all the time I spent fishing them I found that on average, a silver willow leaf worked better during clear conditions, light clouds and clear to stained water. Gold or brass would fair much better in stained water and on cloudy, overcast days, the best way would be to experiment on any given day it can change. I've had days where it was clear and we hammered them on gold blades and had the same thing happen when fishing silver during an overcast day but those days were exceptions, more often it was silver or nickel during the clear days and gold or brass during the overcast days. 2 Quote
Slefler Posted April 5, 2014 Author Posted April 5, 2014 That's what I had always thought but I wanted to poll the experts! Quote
Stingray23 Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 I pretty much throw all white, all chartruese, chart/white 99% of the time. I'll experiment with a different color every once in a while. I prefer double willow for more flash and speed because I fish clear to slightly stained water. I use all silver blades on sunny, clear days with clear water. I use one silver, one gold in clear days or cloudy days with slightly stained water. I will use both gold blades on clear or cloudy days in stained water, say, after multiple rainy days with a lot of run-off that muddies the water. I also use all white blades or chartruese blades for smallies whenever. Spinnerbaits are one of my go to baits. Its extremely effective at finding active fish and a very fun and exciting way to catch bass. They slam 'em. 1 Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted April 5, 2014 Super User Posted April 5, 2014 Oklahoma/turtle back/Indiana blades are good for muddy water and night fishing. Give off a solid thump thump thump that they hone in on. Quote

Super User iceintheveins Posted April 5, 2014 Super User Posted April 5, 2014 Good general rules of thumb. Most of our waters don't have shad, so I use spinnerbaits with one gold and one silver blade usually. Golden shiner, chartreuse shad, white, and chartreuse white seem to be the best bet for me for skirt colors. I like black in murkier water as well. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted April 5, 2014 Super User Posted April 5, 2014 My best producing spinnerbaits is the Mann's classic 1/4oz gold Colorado blade with white skirt with a mister twister 4" split double tail grub trailer with the trailer hook. A shot of YUM shad and I'm good to go. I'm not sure why but this Mann's spinnerbaits right out of the package setup up correctly works awesome. Can't find it? Amazon.com Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 5, 2014 Super User Posted April 5, 2014 Take Catts advice. My advice is don't bother with overthinking spinnerbaits and buy good quality like Nichols spinnerbaits. Tom Quote
Super User Munkin Posted April 6, 2014 Super User Posted April 6, 2014 Don't forget a black bait with a single Colorado blade for night fishing. I build most of my own baits but the SK midnight special with the black blade is my go-to bait for night fishing. Allen 1 Quote
wisconsin heat Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 I pretty much use Gold almost all of the time because the waters I fish don't have many silvery colored baitfish. Quote
