Super User Scott F Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 I want to know how you keep 30 rods that are all strung up with lures from getting tangled up. Even with rod socks, trying to find the rod you want, getting it out, removing the rod sock and putting back the rod you are no longer using would have to take as much time as tying on a new bait. How does that work? Quote
mjseverson24 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 what ever makes you happy, keep telling your self that to justify it. I just think as recreational fshermen you dont need that many setups, but that could just be me. So your honestly telling me you could not do what you are doing with maybe 3-4 rods??? You are talking about 1/8-1/2 oz of weight difference, so your saying there is no rods that can adapt to that?? Weird. I can understand have more tackle, but all these combos just seems crazy, to try and catch fish. It depends what your goal is... My goal is to catch as many and as big of fish as I can every time I go fishing... More options gives me the ability to be more efficient on the water... I think if I used 3-4 rods I would catch 40% roughly maybe 50% of what I catch now... there are plenty of rods that can effectively throw a range of 1/2 oz differences, but the difference that i am talking about is not having to cut and retie every time i want to change my weight wether the change is big or small... I can break 80 on most courses using a 6 iron a 56* wedge and a putter... I can get much closer to scratch with all 14 clubs allowed by the rules... if i was allowed to carry 17 clubs i would on average probably do even better... Rods and reels are tools to catch fish, you can get by with duck tape WD-40 and a vise-grip and do 70% of any repair job around the house, but most people have more than just those tools... is it because they want to show them off to their friends??? Maybe... is it because they have too much money that they don't know what else to do with it??? Maybe... Is it because when certain things are in need of repair a special too is needed, and they would like to have it on hand just incase??? Probabily... Holy crap I must be bored... Can i go fishing yet... Mitch 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 more options gives your more room to fine tune your presentation... you can do it with one rod, but you will spend a lot of time cutting and retying instead of fishing, especially i the bite is tough... If the bite is hot there is no real reason to change lures or rods unless the fish are small, then maybe a need (or is it a desire) for a big bait set up. If the bite is slow there is nothing but time to retie or change lures, which only takes a few seconds anyway. I don't think that many rods is more efficient, you can have only 1 lure in the water at time. Efficiency is doing the most with the least. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 I own 20-25 combos, they value in cost and quality. On the majority of days I fish, I can get by with 3, on other days when the fishing is a little more tough, I might use 5. It is nice to have specific combos for different techniques, and multiples of some so you don't have to retie as often, but you can certainly get by without them and still catch a lot of fish and have a great time. Lendiesel22 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I have 6- 4BC and 2-Spinning. I "want" 10 I need to add a flipping rod, 1 more cranking rod, 1 more plastics rod, 1 more spinning rod. Quote

Super User tomustang Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 How many do you "need"? 1. 6'8MF for Topwater, Jerkbaits, Spinnerbaits, Lighter Soft Plastics 2..7'MHF for Jigs, Trigs, Heavier Soft Plastics 3. 7'MHM for Crankbaits Quote

How does that work? it took some practice and some lessons learned the hard way, but it works great now... No crankbaits go in the box any more... That was one of the lessons learned the hard way... i typically have <15 rods on deck at any given time... more than that and it starts to get pretty crowded... Mitch Quote

Mitch No they are not that good the Strands hang up alot on the spinners and the spinners also hang up on the line quite a bit. But that is just my personel experience with them. And yeah there is a lot of ice here! But some open water. Quote

Mitch I did trim two down but still had issues with the spinners catching up on the line. And when trimmed down just di not look right if you know what i mean. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 My garage just said 27 but there is room to add one more need to the rack. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 I fish a wide variety of lakes and conditions so I feel it is tough to get by with just a few. I have all purpose spinning and casting rods but also very technique specific. There are days where I can start and end with the same outfit but others where I switch frequently. I have more outfits than I care to admit but as I noted some are seasonal... ie hair jig and finesse jig rods, float and fly rod, frog rod, swimbait rod, etc... I am comfortable with 5-10 majority of the time. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 What has "NEED" got to do with it? I have more than I 'need', but nowhere near as many as I 'want'. That pretty much sums it up. Face it women collect shoes, we collect fishing equipment. And how many do I have, well I need to buy another rod rack from BPS, of course I'm gonna have to buy a few more rods once I do so it's full too. Quote
BobP Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Well, as you can see, it all depends on whatcha got and how you like to fish. You can do with only a few combos if you don't mind taking the time while fishing to re-rig lures while rotating through the possibilities to find out what is works that day. My boat has slots for 6 rods so that's usually my max rod load. I sit down the night before and decide what may catch fish based on weather, season, and specific fishing knowledge of the lake. Most times one of the 6 will work. Occasionally I'll have to re-rig. I don't fish tournaments so speed is not an issue. But re-rigging rods on the water is not ideal, so in the end it's a question of balance: how much of a hurry are you in? how much junk you want in the boat? and what can you afford?. Quote
BrianSnat Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 For bass fishing I own 10 rods. 8 spinning and two baitcasting outfits, I usually bring 6 with me, though if I'm fishing with someone else I may cut it to 4. I like being able to go from one bait to another quickly without stopping to tie something new on. I usually bring two rigged with plastics, one unweighted and one weighted (dropshot or Carolina rig), Two with crankbaits, usually a deep diver and a floating Rapala, one with a spinnerbait and one with a jig If you add my trout rods and saltwater, I have probably 20+. My wife tells me I collect rods like some women collect shoes/ Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 4, 2014 Super User Posted April 4, 2014 I'll let you know when I think I feel I have enough. Currently I have 22 reels and 20 rods. I still feel like I need more. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 5, 2014 Super User Posted April 5, 2014 I only 'need' 1 fishing outfit, but I would 'like' about 15, but somehow get by with '7' (all told, my wife & I tote 14 outfits) Roger Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 5, 2014 Super User Posted April 5, 2014 Think about what your are saying, spend hundreds or thousands of dallars to save a minute or two???? WOW. Honestly i agree with you people can do what ever they want with there money.. it is there money. But the topic is how many DO MANY SETUPS YOU REALLY NEED, it is not about bragging how many you have, and then justifing why you have so many. Take a Valium, sit back and relax friend. This topic comes up on a regular basis. As you can see, most of us seldom stick strictly to the topic. Some of us have fun with it on a regular basis. I started fishing at 5. I was probably 16-17 before I ever had more than one rod, and even then the total count only amounted to two. Not too hard to make one do when the majority of your bait was what you could catch along the shoreline or dig up somewhere else. Artificial lures were expensive and seldom used. (Wish I could buy a few hundred lures at those prices now. LOL.) Hundreds of thousands of $$$ might be a bit of an exaggeration. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few who have spent that kind of money, but they would be few and far between. I have managed to spend a few thousand the past 5 years. More than I should have, but not nearly what I wish I could have. The money has been spread out over all 5 years. I didn't step out and buy all my gear the first month I got back into fishing. You may have already guessed that not many posting on fishing forums are going to limit themselves to 2 or 3 rods even if they could do all their fishing with that number. I don't buy reels (or rods) so that I can brag how many I have. I have bought more reels than I need simply because I like reels. Never yet met a reel I didn't like well enough to keep. Do I need the number I have? Of course not. I hope that my having them doesn't make me a bad person cuz I will be bad til the day I die if that is the case. Nor do I try to justify to you or anyone else why I have as many as I have. My wife doesn't like how many I have, but that is just too d**n bad. I am not going to justify myself to her either. I've worked a second job most of my married life. If I have started to spend some of that money on myself for fishing gear, then that is my prerogative. If I feel like carrying 3 rods all set up with different color 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits so that I don't have to retie, then that is what I will do. Okay. Now I am going to take a Valium, sit back and relax. 2 Quote
Alpha Male Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 For me I carry 25-30 combos with every day, typically 5 spinning and 25 casting... How many do i "Need"??? I would say that i could catch 80% of what i currently catch using 30 rods with only 15 rods... i could catch 60% with 10 rods, 50% with 5 and 40% with 3... three rods for me would be the minimum I could do it with, 1 jig/frog/t-rig rod, 1 reaction bait rod and 1 spinning rod for DS/shakey head... but why would I want to limit the number of fish I catch, because of the number of rods I want to bring... some days you can get on a pattern and use 1 or 2 rods all day, others all 30 of mine get used. I love to junk fish, its just a ton of fun... Mitch well... I have 16 combos, 5 casters and 11 spinning rods. I like to just keep everything setup ahead of time. also Not everything i have is for bass. I have 3 poles for walleye, 2 bobbers and one for jigging, one for panfish, and one for muskie/pike. I really like plastics so I do have 3-4 setup for plastics at all time, different weights and hook sizes for different actions and types of baits. I could use one but thats like KVD having one crankbait setup. 1 Quote
