Super User flyfisher Posted April 3, 2014 Super User Posted April 3, 2014 I don't mount mine to my crate. I prefer to not have them straight up behind me. I have ram mounts that i can angle nearly parallel to the water which keeps them out of the way better. Most times though my rods are sitting in front of me though in my commander....easier that way. 1 Quote

Mounted 1 on each side at a 60ish degree angle, and just added 2 that go straight up in the back in case I want to bring more rods or bring a pole stake. I cut out a part for the reel to fit in with a saw saw and then filed/sanded the edges. 1 Quote

I have one holder from the rod pod lid too that I use while fishing. Remeber to test anything that is a permanent mod that might interfere with the paddle strokes. 1 Quote

Will definitely consider those points. One thing I noticed while fishing the predator MX is that the rods behind you are not accessible from the standing position. So I ended up laying a few rods on the deck. Quote

I gave up on even using a crate (for now) last year and the vertical mounting of my rods. Now I lay them in front of me as well, and I keep my tackle there as well (and under my seat since I mounted my seat across the gunnels). This has been, by far, the best to keep my rods out of the way when casting and fighting fish. Quote

I recently added two 6'6" rods to my arsenal, and they're about as long as I would feel comfortable laying in front of me with my 12' yak. Being able to lift my seat is a huge space maker. Part of why I can do what I do. Not everyone has a yak with a seat that can lift out of the way like that. I wasn't putting your choice down, it is just something I'm no longer doing -- for now. I always leave a caveat because I'm constantly changing and tweaking how I fish from my yak. Where I like things to be, etc. So it's a continually evolving "game". I may yet go back to using a crate. I don't find having rods extend out in the front of my boat as to much an issue except on the river. In the river i like everything as tight to the deck as possible to prevent any potential overhanging trees from taking a rod or two... MikeinFresno Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 the minimum length of a rod is what is long enuf for you to reach around the front of the yak when a fish goes from one side to the other. If the rod is too short the line will hang up on the nose of the yak....just for thot here in this discussion Quote
