I did a search to no avail. What is the best worm hook for texas rigging? Mostly 7" ribbontails. I love my gammy ewg but was wondering if the wide gap is even necessary? What do you guys think?

Depends on the worm, how thick how tough the plastic is. If I'm fishing a thick bulky worm I'd go with an EWG, if I'm draggin a small (4") ringworm I use a smaller straight shank. As I said depends on the worm............ 8-)

i pretty much use the ewg for all. is it bad to use the ewg with a smaller worm

I use a 4/0 straight shank gamakatsu with  7" (give or take) ribbon tails like culprits or zoom mags.  I think I get better hook ups than the EWG's I used to use.

I've been using Gammy EWG and superline EWGs for years. "Best" is in the eye of the user. They work for me.

I have been using an EWG hook for all my worm fishing. I might switch up  after reading some numerous reviews on this forum.

I use only tru turns for skinny 7" worms.

seriously- everyone should at least try them if you have not for a worm hook.

Gammy skip gaps are pretty nice as well.

Both these hooks allow you to bury the hook in the bait as opposed to some ewg that are better suited to pierce all the way through and then skin hook it.

I have more confidence in hook set  when it is not pushed all the way through.

I have also used the EWGs for all my plastics and it's fine to me. I rarely ever miss a fish on a hook set. I am however interested in giving the straight shank hooks a try.

Small finesse worms get a 2/0 or 1/0 offset worm hook.

Average worm gets a 3/0 EWG Worm hook.

Anything bigger gets a 4/0 or 5/0 Superline EWG

Owner wide gap plus and the new Owner lightwire twistlocks depending on what I am T rigging. I used to like the Gami ewgs but never looked back after using these.

I still like the Gami splitshot /dropshot hooks for dropshoting worms though.

Basser, everyone has their opinion about hooks, etc., so may I suggest reading everyone's input and then making up your own mind.

There are so many hooks in the marketplace you can put yourself in the Funny Farm trying to make a selection.

So try to keep it simple.

I switched to the weedless hooks as I fish in a lot of structure and cover. So far, they have preformed very well.

And then there are the small drop shot hooks along with the EWG for your Carolina rigs.

Just try to keep it simple and experiment. You will find the hooks you like best for the various techniques you use.

Good luck.  :)

Like they said, "best" is relative. Different situations call for different hooks. As Sam told you, keep it simple.

I think you were on the right track with the EWG. I like to rig them Texposed around light to moderate cover, and use offset shank hooks with the point buried under the worms surface around heavier cover.

If I had to limit my choice to one hook for mostly 7" ribbontails, I would choose a Gama 4/0 EWG.

I guess I am old school. I still like the Mister Twister hooks with the worm keeper. I primarily fish in alot of weeds and a Texposed EWG hook always fouls too quickly.
